TINUI
I FROM OUKOWX COHEESPO.VDENT.] July 22,1879. _ Winter with all its gloom and many difficulties is fully upon us. It is an mnisually severe season; the amount of rain has been heavy, and frosts very severe, consequently the roads are in a dreadful state and it cannot at present be estimated what the cost will bo in repairing tin damage done. Although the Tinui Bridge is passable for Pack-horses, dray traffic is entirely stopped. The Cashpoint road is terribly cut up; the ruts in some places are deep and dangerous. Part of the road facing the Racecourse has slipped into the river, an ugly gap. If reports arc correct, the sooner tenders are called for makinc the Mungapakelia road, where originally laid off, the better, as last year's formation has goao the way of slips and floods, and it will be a very expensive undertaking to put it in anything like passable order. In fact, conversing recently with one of the contractors, I was somewhat surprised to learn that the repairs required on this road will cost nearly as much as making a new road on,the opposiee side where the foundation is good and metal in abundance.
Information was brought in on Saturday that a man was severely frost-bitten, and had boon laying out in the Mungapakeha. He was originally cook at Mangnuson's Hotel, Whakataki, and some charitablydisposed individual intended forwarding the unfortunate man to the Masterton Hospital, There is some dissatisfaction expressed regarding the non-completion of the inland road from Whakataki to Castlepoint, It would be well if this progressive work was pushed on before the wool haulage commences,
I hear that Mr McHutcheon is the purchaser of Mangnuson's interest at Whakataki, and that it is that gentleman's intention to erect a comfortable hotel on this property. I am informed from a reliable source, that there is no further clue to the two horses stolen from Miller's paddock some four or five months ago ; surely there is something rotten in the state of Denmark hero, a more unprecedented occurrence cannot be imagined in any district in New
Zealand, more especially as a re £ls for their recovery has been ai: offered.
Tho Foresters' monthly meeting on the 12th instant. Dr Board tertou, was in attendance, and Hi aomo arrangement was made with attend its members when called ut a stated sum per annnm. A well-attended meeting of the I Board was held on Saturday last, the usual mode of business, in accounts for payment etc.,• the c for immediate attention was tin bridge This matter is to be attc forthwith. The wholesale slipp Mungapakeha was considered, imagine the this dam feelings of this energetic body, the discussion, one of the Wardc No. G ward) his resignati what reason is ri&clear; howev was accepted, oM consequent amount of regret expressed I mus tain.
With much pleasure I report the of £22 as Government ghuit to th and Castlepoint Library.] The Con will no doubt supplement their I books.
I am informed that there is no LI surance agency in connection wi Post Office, and there areluilf-a-do; tlere paying their premiums out district. Of course this is a great venience to them, which should be ded to withont delay, more especi extend the benefit of this business. Last Saturday night and Sunda ning we had snow in earnest, and a appearances, would have thought tl latitude had changed, for snowwas quite a pleasure. Snow kept throughout the day night; Mondaj fine, which was indeed acceptable t
