A COMPLAINT.

To the Editor of the Wahiabapa Daily. Sir - If you will permit me through the medium of your columns, allow me to call attention \& the powers that be—-

which I presume is County West, to the very disgraceful state of the highway from the Borough of Maaterton to Kay's Hotel, Taratahi. It is simply disgraceful to allow a road running as it does through a piece of country full of stone to get into such a state as it is at present—holes here and ruts there from one end to the other. There does not appear to he one single man employed on the whole length of this road (a distance of about seven miles). Well, sir, in my opinion two men and one horse and cart six months in the year would keep this road in a good stato\o' repair at a cost of ahout £l5O, and I aL quite sure the traffic is important enougl to justify this expenditure. The excuse, probably, is no funds. Well, I wonld like to know what becomes of the tax im- , posed in the shape of the toll-gate at the Waiohine river, let at a rental of about £BOO a year. Probably the reply would be that it has gone into the byways of the Taratahi-Carterton Highway Board. If so the county should see that it comes from some other source, so that the road may be repaired and at once, or it will shortly cost four times £l5O to put it in repair. Hoping you will excuse me for trespassing on your space—l am, &c, One of the Travelling Public. GREYTOWN CADET CORPS. To the Editor of ike Wairaiupa daily. Sir,—Would you permit me through the columns cf your valuable paper to ask a question. It is this: Why do not the Greytown Volunteers, who have now been in existence over a year, form a Cadet Corps, whereby all the promising lads about the town could be trained to arms, which training, if did nothing else, would keep them out of mischief, and when they arrive to the age required they might be transferred to the adult Corps, not as raw recruits, but as trained soldiers, fit to compete with any veteran in the G.R.V.O. Then, why should not this be done 1 Masterton has already taken the preliminary steps, and I am sure Greytown will not long remain in the rear. Hoping Captain Macara and the other officers of the G.R.V. Corps will interest themselves in the matter. I beg to subscribe myself Old Soldier, Greytown, July 18th.
