CARTERTON.

(from our own correspondent.)

July 15,1879,

I am glad to inform you that the covering of the ditch in front of the Marquis of rTormanby Hotel is no.longer likely to prove the dangerous pitfall it has been to all vehicles and travellers during the past few months. The old covering has been taken up and is being replaced by substantial timber, the cost being defrayed by the Highway Board, the owner and the lessee of the hotel.

I yesterday attended a private rehearsal of our amateur knights of the buskin. They have made rapid strides in the way of improvement, and Friday night's entertainment promises to be a decided success.

The Carterton Borough is,.not to bo shelved without a fight. I understand the residents who presented the petition for its creation intend to memorialise His Excellency denying the veracity of certain opposition points in the counter-petition, so probably before the matter is finally settled another commission will be appointed to inquire into the merits of the case.

The Volunteers went through their weekly drill last night, all the officers and 37 rank and file being in attendance. The advisability of the by-law providing for a fine being inflicted on any man speaking in the ranks was seen in the improvement in the motions.' Those' who wished to attend to instructions could do so without being troubled by the chattering of adjacent fib, while tht talkista, having to

keep quiet, attended to instruction they might otherwise not have paid much attention to. Another step in the right direction is the clearing the hall of all who are not members of the corps during the drill. Single-sticks kept plenty lively, both before and after drill, and tended to the amusement of the non-combatant».
