CARTERTON.
(feoji our own correspondent.) July Bth, 1879, So the anti-boroughites have actually had the consummate impudence to send their anti-petition into His Excellency the Governor, to pray that the district named in the original petition may not be created a Borough ! Well, I have heard it said that you could .drive a coach and four through the" besi act of Parliament that was framed, but by my patron saint, St. Denis, I' think you could make 50 light horse wagons with their full complement •of horses make a journey through this counter petition, If a commissioner is appointed to examine the matter, and the Borough of Carterton is not duly proclaimed,, the denizens of the district will only have to thank the apathy and want of energy of the promoters for the non s'uccess of the end sought for;
Tlie want of a society for the ptotdctibn of dumb animals from cruelty in'OUr , midst was most amply exemplified to-day. Two Scandinavians drove' a pqov cow through the town, with a full four feet log attached to its neck. The poor beast, going as it would, could not have failed to get the heavy thing against its limbs at every step, but infuriated as it was by repeated blows, it stumbled at every pace y and the only'wonder is that its legs were not smashed long before it reached the top of the Belvidere road, where it finally lay ' down, thoroughly exhausted. Snch beastly cruelty (the expression is rather strong, but there is nothing like calling a spade a spade) deserves severe reprehension, and had I only been able to get the names of f ; the drivers, you should have had them in : » full to hold up to the public reprehension. . .ty The Annual General Meeting of the 'Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and . Agricultural Society was held to-day, atthe Marquis of Normanby Hotel It was anticipated that there would have been a large attendance, bnt those who have really taken an interest in the success of , Association, and have devoted their time and resources to its developement and •■•"' weliare, were the only member who put in an appearance. It is greatly to be regretted that where a number of gentlemen have voluntarily banded themselves together for such praisworthy objects as this k „ society desires to effect, that the onus of carrying out the affair in its integrity should be left to some half-dozen energetic members. It is the old tale of, the willing horse may work, but in fairness some of the rest of the team should put the wheel. It is to be hoped that the •■- residents of the Valley, looking at the .importance of this society in the district at large, will speedily see the remaining outstanding eight and. twenty. debentures taken up, so that the bank overdraft may be, reduced, or rather altogether liquidated, aud the yards and sheds on • the grounds put in a thoroughly efficient condition.
