The San Francisco mail may be expected in the Wairarapa to-day.
His Excellency the Governor has returned to Wellington, The monthly meeting of the Greytown Working Men's Club Committee will be held to-night. Captain F. W. Ruck, of the New Zealand Militia, has been gazetted to the command of the Masterton Volunteers the appointment dating from June 2nd. The Masterton Library has received a cheque for L 215, being its share of the Library grant recently divided by the Education Board.
We are glad to learn that Mr Campbell, cashier for some time past at the Bank of Australasia at Masterton, has been promoted to the charge of the branch of the same bank at Sandon. The football match between Grr/sown and Carterton will como off to-day at 2.30 in Mr Vickcrstaffs paddock, and from the confidence displayed by each team there ought to be good sport. An Italian barber, after a two months' career at Masterton, has quietly taken his departure without settling fur his board and lodging and other little liabilities.
Wo arc glad to learn that " the 4th" passed off satisfactorily at Mastcrton. Engagements were generally met, excepting in cases of assigned estates, where of course, it wos understood that certain outstanding bills would not be provided for.
The usual weekly drill of the Greytown Volunteers will be hold on Monday instead of Tuesday, on account of the Soiree en Tuesday. The members are expected to roll up on Monday night to help to decorate the Hall for the Soiree.
It is pretty generally known that the principal reason which mado Mr Stout retire altogether from the political arena was personal antagonism to the Premier. It is bad for liberal measures when the two most pronounced liberals in the colony are " so near and y<?t so far," A Sydney telegram says the Maid of Honor has been sold to Mr Payn, of New Zealand, for 500 guineas. Whether the said Maid is a biped or a quadruped, is left to tho imagination of the reading public. In either case the Maid must be dear to Mr Payn. We are informed that search parties were opt on Thursday and Friday at the Taueru River, Messrs Hood, Scoles, and Drummond closely examined the river yesterday on each-side from the place where the unfortunate young man went in down to the Taueru Bridge; but not even a fragment of clothing was disco--I'ered,
, There was a fail' muster of tho Mastertoil Volunteers at the Town Hall last evening, though many members'were conspicuous by their absence.Squad drills were practised in a business-like manner, and there is every promise in flue time of an efficient Company.' Wo notice by an exchange that Mr Boddington, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Lyttelton, prior-to his removal to Ly'ttglton, was presented by the. residants of that port with a handsome marble clock, while the clerks of the bank presonted him with a handsome meerschaum'pipc,. We lc'arn from Carterton that a gardener while digging this morning in tho garden at the rear of the Marquis of Uonnanby Hotel discovered a case containing bones, supposed to be those of an infant wrapped up in flannel. Itwasevident that some time had elapsed since tlieso relics had been deposited, and from their condition a medical examination can only solve their human identity. Information having been given to the police, doubtless further investigation will take place. • Telegrams get twisted somehow. The following ono.from yesterday's New Zealand Times is a sweet example: —" Masterton, Thursday.—Yesterday Mager and J. C. Macandrew were sentenced to a month, and a man named. Adshed to six weeks' imprisonment, for larceny from Caselberg's shop." Duly interpreted by the light of local events it should read that "yesterday the Mayor and J. C. Andrew- sentenced a man named Adsliead to six weeks' imprisonment for larceny from Caselberg's shop." We have had the pleasure of seeing a beautiful star, with the emblem of the Order of the Foresters set in gold, which it is the intention of the Court Wairarapa, No. 5.354, to present to Bro. H. L. Byrn, their late Treasurer, as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by the members of that Court while in office. It is a really beautiful medal, but no doubt Mr Byrn will not value it more for the actual value of the gift as the feeling that it expresses from his brethren. We may say it is exactly similar to the star presented by tho' same Court some time ago to P. 0.11, Bro;-Baillie,

Mr. Finny, a London dentist, claims to havo found affiled tooth in the jaw of an Egyptian mummy. Dentistry was further advanced 4000 years ago in Egypt than is supposed. The latest Paris swindle for a "laboring man" is to aacidentally fall against a 500 franc window and smash it. Proprietor rushes out and catches him, searches his'clothes, finds a 1000 franc bill in them, takes out half for the window, and gives 509 francs back. Then he discovers at his leisure that the 1000 franc bill is forged, and that the " labouring man" was a swindler.
Tho London Times says"lt would be idle to deny that a feeling of satiety and almost of weariness has come over Europe in regard to international exhibitions The new and fascinating idea of a friendly rivalry of nations in commerce and the pursuits of peace, which the world greeted with enthusiasm in 1851, has been not a a little discredited in various ways sidce that time. What was at first thought to be a temple of peace and concord has come to be regarded as only a gigantic medium of advertising. A story is told of a shrewish Scotchwoman who tried to wean her husband from the public-house by employing her brother to act the part of a ghost, and frighten John on his way home, " Who are you ?" said the guidman, as the apparition rose before him from behind a bush. " lam Auld Nick," was the reply. "Come awa,' man," said John, nothing daunted, " Gie's a shake o' your hand —lam married tae a sister o' yours."
