A man named Paul Clifford was smothered to-day while working as a direr at tlio barque Belle. He had on a diving apparatus with air tube, hut when released a very small quantity of air was found in the helmet, and the man was quite dead, although he had only been immersed a little over ten minutes' An inquest will be held to-morrow, A man named Dillon was arrested at Am. bersey for obtaining £lO5 from Eoyse, Stead and Co., by fraudulent representations. Dr Foster, a leading Christehurch lawyer, was to-day fined 10s for gettitg off the train while in motion. On the young man named Bamford.who was killed in his tent by a landslip at Pigeon Bay, a verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded. As the accounts of Saturday's floods come in from the country districts, it appears that the damage done has been very great and general, "At East Malvern the water-race has been injured to the extent of £1,500. The formation of the railway extension from Sheffield to the Kowai Pass lias been swept away in many places, On the main road to Aliaroa not a bridge or culvert is left uninjured. Miles of fencing have been destroyed in various parts. The railways are greatly damaged in so many places that it would bo tedious to give details, It is now raining again heavily, and a message from Amberley states that there is every prospect of a flood there to-night.
