FEATHERSTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of tho above Board took place at the Institute, Greytown, on last Saturday, Present—Messrs J. Tully (chairman), Jas. Donald, Alfred Matthews, T. Walker, C. Phillips, and J. P. Russell (treasurer). The minutes of the previous were read and confirmed.
The Treasurer reported that the receipts during the past month were confined to rates, viz., £327 7s Gd, the present credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand being £BS 4s lid; but it was expected that between £405 and £SOO would come in, as rates, during the next month, Account amounting to £532 7s <ld were passed for payment. The Engineer reported that, owing to the rough weather, the works had not made much progress during the past month. That lie had examined the road leading to Messrs Fry and Tidswcll's land at Rimutaka; that the contract for cuttings at Ponui, Western Lake, was completed, and that he had called for tenders for a small piece of road formation at Lands End, Western Lake.
Mr Donald drew the attention of the Board to the state of the road known as Carkeok's Line, Featherston. He also •recommended that a portion of the contract at South Featherston be changed so as to more immediately benefit the settlers,
Mr Phillips pointed out that a dangerous crevice had been formed by a stream undermining a portion of the road near Wailienga townships. There was only one tender for the work at Lands End, viz., John Gooding, at 10s per chain, which was accepted.
The Board resolved that no new works be undertaken during the next two months; also that, as the County Council had not contributed to the cost of maintaining the Main Road, further repairs of the road be stopped until some equitable arrangement be arrived at with the County Council for the supply of funds. . CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read : From Mr James Wilkinson, insisting that he would claim compensation for taking a road through his land. Prom Mr Thomas Ward, claiming compensation for 1| acres of laud taken from him for road purposes which he valued at £3O peracre. From the Proprietors of the Wairarapa Daily, and Wairarapa Standard, declining to tender for the advertising of the Board. It was Resolved—That Mr Thomas Ward be allowed compensation for the land taken from him at the rate of £lO per acre, the Engineer stating that the amount of land did not come to more than half-an-acre'. The Chairman presented the minutes of Public Meeting held at Tauherinikau for ,the purpose of considering the advisability of adopting.the Regulations of "The Local Elections Act, 1870," and it was unanimiously resolved resolved that tho said Act be adopted.
