Another member of thq Grey Ministry has gone, the Hon, J. Ballance having resigned the Colonial Treasureship from differences with his chief. The beginning of the end is evidently fast approaching. It is evident that the emoluments of high offices and the dignities thereof are not sufficient inducements to make men of any independence of character continue to act as colleagnes of Sir George Grey. The differences in the Cabinet for the past •twelve months have been as obvious as they have been detrimental to the progress of the Colony. The alternative to which events have long been pointing has been an autocratic Premier with a nominal Cabinet or a new Ministry. The retirement of Messrs Stout and Ballance will tend to force on the latter and more desirable course.
