SOUTH WAIRARAPA WORKING MEN'S CLUB.
The annual meeting of the members to 9* held in the Club on Saturday evening, at' 8 p. m. There were about 20 members present, Mr Barnard, the vice-President, in the Chair. The, Chairman having read the advertisement calling the meeting, called on the Secretary for tlio report, which was as follaws'
REPORT. Gentlemen,—ln submitting this, tlio first report of tho proceedings of your Committee, and an abstract of the affairs of tlio Club sinco its opening in September, 1878, your Committee are of opinion tli.it, although we are not as yet clear from debt as we could wish, the position ef tho Club is a fair one. The Club is yet in its infancy, and there has scarcely been a meeting of the General Committee, but seven or eight new members have been elected. The number of financial members on tho books at tho present dato beine 135. During the time your Committee have bo«j in office they havo held eleven ordiand tho Houso Committee havo met regularly, with but one exception, to regulate tho management of the Club. A suggestion and complaint book are kept in the Reading Room, No complaints have been made therein, and only two or three suggestions, which have been attended to. During the term there havo been four vacancies in the Committee, caused by Messrs Payton, Samuels, and Edwards leaving the district, and Mr Cowper resigning. The places of Messrs Payton and Edwards havo been filled by Messrs A, B. Jackson and B. Kimberley. The places of Messrs Samuel and Cowper have been loft vacant until this annual election. The Balance Sheet has been submitted to and adopted by tho Commiitee, and the books audited and signed by the Auditors. An abstract shews that the net profit for the term lias been £21419s 8(1. Kent, salaries, and general expenses have been paid regularly, and furniture to tho amount of £SO purchased and paid for. The rent of premises has been reduced from £5 to £4los per week, and the net liability of this Club at dato is £B4 Is 2d, Not a large amount in itself, but a larger ono than your Committee had hoped to report, but they feel confident that due regard to economy and tho daily experience gained, tho Club should steer clear in the next six months. Your Committee would suggest that any complaints or suggestions by any member may be placed in tlio suggestion book, as it greatly assists the committee in remedying any defects which may arise, In conclusion your committee would point out that it will be necessary this evening to elect ten members of committee for the ensuing year. Those retiring are Messrs Fuller, Gray, Avery, R, V. Smith, Jackson, Kimberley, Wakelin, and Wood, all of whom are eligible for re-election, It will also bo necessary to appoint two Auditors for the ensuing year, Messas R. J. Thompson and F, H. Wood being the retiring candidates, and both are eligible for re-election, T. C. Barnard, Vice-President, It was resolved oil the motion of Mr McGuire, seconded by Mr Skeet, that the report be adopted. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Skeet, seconded by McGuire, that the eight retiring members be again elected to the Committee. Tho two vacancies were filled by the election of Messrs McGuire and Webster. Messrs F. H. Wood and R, J, Thompson wero re-elected Auditors, It wa, resolved on tho motion of Mr Webster, seconded by Mr Skeet, that a vote of thanks be passed to the retiring committee. Mr Penton was elected Trustee vice Mr Payton who had left the district. A vote of thanks was passed to tho Secretary, Mr Bock, on the motion of Mr My McGuire, seconded by Mr Gray for his valuable services in the past. A voto of tlio chairman concluded the business, COMMITTEE MEETING. The general committee meeting met immediately after to appoint a House Committee, for the ensuing year. The retiring Honse Committee was re-elected. Some other business of a routine character was transacted and several now members elected.
