CARTERTON.
(from our own correspondent.) May 19, 1879. It is with regret I have to announce the sudden decease of our fellow-townsman Mr George McPartland, who passed from our midst with but short warning _ early yesterday morning. His brother-in-law had gone into the township with his horse to meet him, and on arriving at his home it was found that the veteran _ could not descend from his horse, being in a comatose state. He was carried into his house and shortly afterwwds the vital spark was extinguished. The cause of death is | believed to be heart disease. The deceased was one of the very earliest of tho pioneers of this district, having arrived nearly a quarter of a century ago as an employee on the formation of the main line of road, An inquest will take place at the Royal Oak Hotel to-day at 2 p.m. The deceased, I understand, formerly belonged to Her Majesty's 49th Regiment. The A. O. F. Court, Marquis of Normanby, have finally decided to hold their Sportson the Agricultural Society's ground in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the birthday of Her Most Gracious Majesty, and the third anniversary of the inauguration of the Court, on Monday, the 2Gth instant, Saturday being a most inconvenient day for all business people. As the programme is good, entrance fee light, the prizes worth contesting, and tho site of the Sports very eligible, I trust our heroes of tho sylvan glades will meet with unbounded support from the public at large throughout the Valley, as well as from members of the fraternity. Business is very brisk here—on credit, In fact, in the Commerical Handicap " Cash," who was never a very hot favorite, is completely out of the running, and it is any odds with the public in favor of his half-broiher ''Credit." The management of the Wairarapa Valley Guardian has once again changed hands, our late able editor, Mr H. CasseWilliamson having been superseded by Mr Grigg, who is well known in the Valley as the former editor of the Mercury in Greytown. On dit, we are likely to have another paper here shortly.
