The Post Office Hotel narrowly escaped being burnt down this morning about three o'clock. Some coal ashes the cook threw in an outdoor bin broke out into a. blaze. Fortunately the fire was discovered, The Post says the Government have laid before the Attorney-General a case as to whether a certain article published by the Timaru Herald affords grounds for a criminal proseoution against that paper, The article stated that certain Government cheques had been dishonored by the Bank, contrary to an agreement subsisting between the bank and Government,
The Governors of the Wellington College have succeeded in raising a loan of .-£SOOO for five years at ten per cent. Government have accepted a tender for the first section of the Otago Central Bailway, but the amount and the successful tenderer will not bo disclosed ti'V the contract is signed, BLENHEIM. Thursday . ' The Upton Fells and Upton Downs sheep runs of 22,820 acres freehold and 26,930 acres leasehold, with 23,000 sheep, was auctioned to-day. It was started for £25,000, and ran up by £IOOO bids to. £34,000, when it fell to the Bank. W. L. Saunders, of Otago, bid £33,000. Two cattle rims of 32,138. acres, of which 2552 acres were freehold, were withdrawn at £24,000.
PATEA. Thursday,/ A melancholy acCidont, resulting indeath, occurred at tho Patea breakwater about dusi yesterday. Richard Dickson, contractor, while assisting at the works, fell in front of tho crano used for shifting concrete Hooks, when one of his legs was taken off, only a small piece of skin being left hanging. Two doctors were at onco sent for, but Dickson died fivo minutes after they arrived. The occurrence cast quite a gloom over the town. Inquest to-day, CHRISTCHtffiOH. Thursday. W. Power, 15 years old, with several aliases, was charged with stealing a gold chain and locket, the property of Edward Grabble, The robbery wa3 committed in a boarding-house. On information being given to a detective, the boy was arrested, but in the meantime he had pledged the chain for 35s and spent the money, He told the police he had been brought by four men from Dun-
eclin to commit robbery. Inspector Hicteon said the real name of tho boy was W. Power, son of a carter in Dunedin, and formerly employed as a message boy in the Otago Daily Times office- He had been convicted of forgery, and liberated on his father's recognizance to come up for sentence when called upon, on account of his youth. The Magistrate said tho boy had had his chance and abused it, otherwise he would summarily have disposed of the case, The boy was committed for trial.
