No eligible tender having been received for the formation of one mile and ten chains of the Eketahuna—Alfredton Road, the time for receiving tenders for the same has been extended to the 21st inst. Through the inclemency of the weather there was not a suliicicnt attendance at the Ploughing Match meeting, at Taulierenikau, on Saturday last. It therefore stands adjourned for Monday the 19th inst. We trust that the meeting re the Brass Band at Masterton on Friday next will be well attendee]. During the past month it is not too much to say that tho dulness of the times have been increased in the Borough by tho Band discontinuing to play in public. The Postmaster of the Masterton oilicc desires us to draw attention to the fact that the Postal and Telegraph branches arc entirely separated, and people who go looking for telegrams in the Postal department often neglect to obtain them though at the time they are waiting in the Telegraph Department, Social propriety in Hartford, Connecticut, is startled on account of the marm r 'c of . a daughter of ex-Governor Hubbavd with her father's coachman, Fred Shopluid. This practical exemplification of democracy is not relished.
The Press reports that his Excellency the Governor took away from Canterbury three shorthorn coivs for his farm at Wellington. The animals represented all the qualities of the true shorthorn breed, combined with the best capabilities for dairy purposes. No doubt they will do credit to the province and prove profitable to his Excellency. They were bought and shipped by Messrs J. T. Ford aud'Co.
A coloured preacher was holding forth at a camp meeting in America, his theme being the creation of .man and man's fall. He said that when God made Adam, the first man, he made,him of clay, and stuck him up against a three-rail fence to dry, ' Stop sar,' said an excited and rationalistic hearer,' if Adam was the first man, pray who put up dat ar fence.'' Put dat man out ob dis chappel, was the reply. ' Such questions as dem will spilo all de theology in de world.
