At midnight the jury brought in a verdict of guilty of forgery, find guilty of uttering with out intent to defraud. The prisoner said he could not understand the verdict, but admitted that he had an impartial trial. Had he been at liberty he would have beon able to procure exonerating evidence. Ho trusted to public opinion arriving at a different result than that of tho jury. He threw himself 011 the meroy of the Court. Judge Richmond, in passing. sentence, said lie would take into account tlint in all probability tho prisoner did not intend to the full amount; he had merely dabbled in crime. Sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labor. A fatal accident happened yesterday to a a sawyer named Thomas Mitchell, recently from Hokitika, while cross-cutting a log in the bush a few miles, from town, when tlio log rolled over' and crushed him to death.
