ABSENCE OF MIND.
Probably'the moat absent-minded man in the world lives over in Oakland. The 1 other afternoon he walked into the office of a downtown wine merchant, who resided on the same block with him across the Bay, and said" How-do, Mr Jackson, I—" "How-do, Miggs," said the merchant, " glad to see you. Been over , all day ? Come back and take a little fine old sherry." Miggs went back and took some sherry, and then talked stocks, and then took some more sherry, and then told fifteen : different good stories ho had heard recently. In fact, he had put in about three hours comfortably, and was. beginning to think about catching the half-past four boat, when the porter came in to Btir up the fire, " Great heavens! ; Jackson," he exclaimed, " that reminds.- i me I started over this morning to tell you, that your house was on fire. That sherry' put it clean out of my head. ' However,, the piano had been taken out before I left, and they wore letting down the baby ir* the coal-scuttle! so it s all right."
