WELLINGTON. Monday. The Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning, There were 14 .cases, involving 17 persons, but the charges were not of a serious character. ' This is the largest calendar but one which'has been seen for years. The Judge remarked that there seemed to be a decrease in crimes of a
violent character, especially assaults upon females. True bills Were found in the majority of cases to-day, Ernest Wagner, for - obtaining money by means of false pretences, was found guilty, Sentence deferred, The Post to-night calls ottention to. the number of entirely new offices lately created in-the Civil Service, and enumerate the following Railway Commissioner for each Island; .Socretary Railways, Middle Island; Under Secretary Railways Assistant; Under Secretary Public Works Assistant; Under Secretary Immigration and Crown Lands; Assistant Under Secretary Goldfields; Under Secretary for Native Land Purchases; Commissioner of Land Tax ; Under Secretary for Defence; Under Secretary for Marine Department; Deputy Auditor-General -and it adds that it has not exhausted the list.
No further information of a definite character nils been received by Government from the Waimate Plains. Te Whiti, as a proof of his friendly intentions, has sent two of his relatives, who leave for New Plymouth to-morrow to personally arrange matters. His absence will be only for (i few days. In order to assert their, authority, the Maoris cut adrift some punts used in connection with snagging operations on the "Wiaitohai River. They were next day found twenty miies down the river. The County officials and nineteen Government agents have gone up to settle the matter.
A small tribe of natives proceeded on board a snagging punt at the Waiho river this morning and took forcible possession of the gear, &0., leaving the crew unmolested. The County authorities are determined to put a stop to this kind of thing, and will ask permisfjiou'of Slicelian to prosecute the offenders. , AUCKLAND. Monday. The Criminal Sessions opened to-day. The Judge congratulated the Jury on the lightness of the calendar. The were no offences of an aggravated character. Tiventy-three prisoners were charged with twenty-four offences, six being old offenders. All the prisoneis, except tliree Maoris, were able to rend and write. Three of the charges were 'for indecent; assault. One case, was that of a lodger in a hotel who entered the bed of a nmuied woman j another a case of burning stacks of straw.
