FEATHERSRSTON.
(From ouu own Correspondent,) March 11th, 1879. Our township has been unusually'quiet during the past week, but syinptons of a little more stir arc now appearing. Some four or five buildings aro being put up in Fitzherbert-street, intended for shops; and, I believe, their occupants are known, Mr Burt's new store and residence are drawing near completion, and fill up an hitherto blank space in Revans-street. Mr Wood's new premises are completed, as also Messrs loms & Fergusson's, and tho latter firm seems quite established, What with buildings now in hand and those in prospect wo may expect to bo pretty busy for some months. There is some talk of the Pigeon Bush estate / changing hands, as tho owner and present \ occupier, Mr Lucena, contemplates taking up his residence in the Australian colonies at least for a time, MrToogoodis likely to part with his new hotel, which is doing a large business, and will, no doubt, prove a good investment for somi? enterprising victualler. I suppose MrTosgood considers two businesses rather too-good. Our church friends were rather disappointed in not receiving the promised visit from tho Rev Thorpe on Sunday evening last, however, as it was rather wet and our reader is likely to be away for a week or two it is as well as it is since we may very likely reckon on the Rev gentleman 011 Sunday next.
The Local Board held an extra, or an adjourned meeting this evening, consisting of the usual routine of business. The School Committee also held its meeting in the school-room. Correspondence was read by the chairman from the Board of Education stating that the application for desks for the teachers was received and that desks to the value of £l4 would be forwarded. Also that the Board had given Mr Gurr leave of absence to visit the schools in the South Island. On the subject of accommodation the head-master stated that the school was quite full, and that, crowded as the present desk accommodation was, more desks would have to be placed in the rooms, or tho children could not be admitted. The committee under the circumstances thought it would be as well to bring the matter of extension of the premises under the notice of tho Board. Several accounts wero passed for payment. Tho chairman also said that lie had received £25 from tho Board towards the new fencing which had cost £BO in all. After the business was transacted an address and a sum of monoy were presented to the head-master for his services in working up tho school to its present condition. Mr Gurr suitably replied. An entertainment is to be given to-night in tho Odd Fellows Hall, in aid of the funds of the school Fife and Drum Band. Tho tickets are already pretty well circulated, and' a large audience may be expected. Several friends from Wellington will assist.
I am glad that you have at last found a runner for your paper hero, I :un sure it will bo the means of securing a larger circulation as Feathcrston must soon recognise it as its literary medium,
