FEATHERSTON.
[MOM OUR OWN COERESPOJfDEXT.] After the ungual gaiety of the last week our town is rather quiet and were it not for the late-case of robbery from the goods shop and (ho fire at Mr Dorney's store lust night there would be nothing to write about, The great number of visitors last week pretty well tested our hotel accommodation and although during the past twelve months two very large hotels have been built, all were crowded to overflowing, and the Club Hotel, which was rather looked upon as a" white elephant" by some of our knowing neighbors always has a large number of visitors and does a a very largo business otherwise. The Local Board intend expending some of our public money in joining aroad through what we must call at present "Clifford's extreme oblong," When this is done the only applicable term we can apply to it will be Clifford's Strips." If instead of forming roads whero they are not wanted, the Board would make those wc have, already too numerous, a little more presentable, and form a few paths so that we may walk in winter through our main thoroughfare without getting over our knees in mud, $lO members would then be showing themselves worthy of the trust, placed in them by the ratepayers. Early, on Saturday morning Constable Brunskill caught a man named Woodmas carrying a case from the goods shed towards his home, For somotime past there has been a suspicion that things have not been all yight in the shed and a sharp look out has -been kept whi«teb suited in Woodmas' was tried before the ResidJ^Hß^H
on Monday last and found guilty of stealing two cases of Brandy and .one bag of su£""\ When asked wli.it lie lmd to say on-his behalf of Woodnm pleaded liis formor good iliai-acter. Tiie 'Magistrate wisely remarked that many men had good characters without deserving them, and by this means forced themselves into the confidence of their fellows. However as this was hi 3 first offence lie would sentence him to six months hard labor. "\Yoodmas has a wife and four or fivo children. Last night, Doiney's store in Eovans street was entirely burnt down. I am not yet informed of tiie amount of his loss, whether he was insured, or the supposed cause of the tire, I suppose ivninquest will be held. Our Feathorston people are pretty careful, for while fires have taken place all round us, (his is the first we have had for some years. MrDorney's business will not be entirely crippled as his baking business was carried on further down the township in Fox street.
