BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho_ ordinary meeting of the above Council was held yesterday evening in the Council Chamber. Present—His Worship tho Mayor (in the chair), and Crs Feist, Gapper, Gray, McCardle, and Renall. MINUTES, _ The minutes of the last ordinary meeting, and of a special meeting held on the 13th inst. wore read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following outward correspondence was read:—' (1.) To tho various storekeepers within the Borough, with; regard to licenses for keeping gunpowder and other explosives in stock. (2.) To the Manager of tho Bank of Australasia, the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, tho Colonial Treasurer, the Collector of Customs, and the Clerk of the R.M. Court, covering copy of resolution appointing the Bank of Australasia as the bankers of the Borough, and in reference thereto,- /
. (3,) To the Judge of the Assessment .' Court (the Resident Magistrate); with re- : . i gard to the valuations, and tho sitting of the Court. '; "The following inward correspondence was received :
i (1.) From the Clerk of the KM. Court, intimating that payment of moneys due to the Borough Fund would in future be mado by means of Law Court Stamps. (2.) From Mr C. Brown, stating tkt he Jiad no gunpowder or other combmtibk iu stock.-. -
(3.) From Mr W. Gillespie, requesting payment of amount due for land taken to widen Chapel street. RESOLUTIONS. It was resolved that Mr Gallespie's application bo referred to,the Financoj. Committee. '.'k 7 v reports. - i #- ... The Mayor reported tliat agreeably with the resolution ofthe Council, tho Borough Account had been transferred to the Bank of Australasia, and that outstanding accounts had been paid. He also stated that the Works Committee had not met since the last meeting of tho Council, but ho thought the time had now arrived when that Committee should prepare a comprehonsivo'acheme of futuro operations. Or McCardle said that having in mind the difficulty of meeting, and of dealing with the subject in the evening, he thought it advisable that each member of the Committee should prepare an individual report •on tho matter, ■ - ' ■ _ After a few remarks from other Councillors, the subject dropped. PLAN. A Plan of a cottage in Chapel-street was submitted by Mrs Hounslow, and, on the motion of Cr McCardle, seconded by Cr Gray, was referred to the Building Committee with power to act thereon. FOOTPATHS. Cr Kenall enquired whether the occupiers of premises in Church-street had been called upon to pay their proportion of tlie cost of constructing the footpath in that street, The Mayor replied that it was not the practice to require payment until after the work was completed, when the amount would no doubt be forthcoming. DISPUTED LAKD. Cr McCardle drew the attention of the Council to the fact that a building was now in course of erection for Mr Falloon on the land in dispute between that gentlemen Messrs Tait and Murtagh, and suggested that it might bo desirable for for the Council to interpose to prevent further dissention among the parties. It was the feeling of the Council that they. . were not called upon to take action in the matter. > -■ The Council then adjourned at 8 o'clock p.m.,
