The Wairarapa Daily TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1879.

We congratulate the Wairarapa Pastoral Association upon the very satisfactory number of entries which it lias received for its new enterprise" The Ram Fair," Tiie movement is one which has been carried out with advantage in neighboring pastoral districts

for some years, and it only required to be fairly started under good management t<? be equally profitable in the Wa.raritpa, This branch of the Society's business will tend to popularize it because whereas it is objected to the annual exhibitions of stock that the larger proprietors, must cany off the principal honors and reap the greater benefit, a Earn Fair is mora especially a boon to small fanners, who once a year will now be able to select, without trouble or expense, the exact sheep they require, It was, we believe, almost at the instance of small farmers that the question was taken up by the Society, and it is certain that whether this is the case or not they are bound to benefit largely by the Fair if they have sufficient enterprise to take advantage of it. When the present Society a twelvemonth ago.made, as it Were, a new start it was a toss up whether it would sink or swim. It is due to the Secretary, Mr W. S. Forbes, to say that his exertions were mainly instrumental in causing it to keep its head above water, and wo are glad to perceive that he still displays the same active desire to push the Society ahead,, and has been as indefatigable in getting up the Earn Fair as he was in organising the annual Show. The permanent value of any wool-growing district depends in a great measure on a careful selection of the breeds suited for the different qualities of soil which obtain within it, aud also in the cultivation of as fine and even a fleece as possible. The number of rough inferior sheep in all parts of the Valley is very large, and as the same amount of feed would sustain an equal number of superior sheep, it is evident that if attention bo not paid by one and all to improvement in breeds, a largo annual profit will be lost. The Ram Fair about to be held is therefore not only valuable as a Show or saleyard, but indirectly it is of great benefit in giving facilities to all sheep owners to improve their flocks, and from this point of view it deserves the hearty support of all classes in the community. There have been, as is well known, differences of opinion as to the manner in which the Society was first inaugurated, and the way in which it trod on the toes of its predecessors, but so long as it continues to provide the district with Shows like the one which it held two months ago, and the other which is just about to take place, we trust it will be supported by all parts of the district,.

The meeting of the Masterton public school Committee i 3 postponed till Thursday next, Mr Donald Donald offers to let for two or three seasons 2,000 acre 3 of land at Wainuioru for cropping purposes. The ordinary monthly meeting of the County Council of Wairarapa West takes place at Carterton on Wednesday next, at 11 a.m.

Mr Moflit, surgeon-dentist, will arrive at Masterton this afternoon, and will receive patients at Mr Mason's Medical Hall for two days. The Banks are to be closed the whole of Thursday, the 13th instant, and the afternoon on Friday, the 14th instant, for the Wairarapa Races. It is unnecessary perhaps again to remind our Masterton friends of the Presbyterian Soiree this evening, and of the Rev, Mr Paterson's interesting lecture. The Masterton Library Committee meet this afternoon. We trust that it will make prompt arrangements fofTe-opening the Library which has been closed for more than two months,

On Sunday last a boy at Tiuui, Walter Malioncy, broke his arm by a fall from a horse, caused by the saddle turning, Dr Smith proceeded yesterday-to Tinui to set tho fracture,

Messrs M. Caselberg and Co. are instructed by tho Insurance Companies to sell for 14 days at Mrs Hirschberg's store, Greytown, the whole of the goods rescued from tho late fire.

We notice that Mr J. J. Smith, Land and Estate Agent, has been appointed Masterton agent for Messrs P, H, Wood and Co., of Greytown, through wliomany business will receive prompt attention. The Ram Pair at Hawke's Bay was well attended on Thursday last, but prices did not rule so high as last year. The highest price given was for one of Sutton's (Southland) rams, £O2. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency have teceived a telegram from London advising that the next wool sales commence on tho 18th inst.

Messrs lorns and Pergusson sell, on Saturday next, the whole of the household furniture, etc., of M. S. Bell, Esq., Upper Plain. The same firm offers 53 Cotswold Rams, bred by Mr Canning, of Napier, on the 20th inst,, and for March 8 announce their next monthly market sale, The date of the sale of Mr Rhodes Donald's Manaia allotments is fixed for March thelßth.

_ At a recent ball in Paris the electric light was tried, to the imminent discomfiture of some of the ladies, one of them, whose cosmetic objected to the electric flame, turning' perfectly black. False roses were displayed in all their nakedness, and a regular stampede into a dress-ing-room took place. There rougo was washed off and powder dusted on; but the effect of the latter process was still more comical. Each lady looked as if half prepared for the role of a clown in the pantomime. The introduction of this illumination was not a practical joke. Monsieur Cernuischi simply desired to have his rooms brilliantly lighted, and was guiltless of a malicious intention of converting Ilia establishment into a "Palace of Truth."

At the funeral of the General's second cousin in Paris last week, a Phonograph Company supplied the entire music. They uncorked three numbers of the " Stabat Mater," which had been put up by Carlotta Patti, Sims Reeves, Mr Santly, and others, the effect being perfect, and the sound as delicious as when first emitted from the throats of-these great artists. The only flaw in the most impressive service (and that can be easily pardoned in so new an invention), was that a careless clerk had labelled one machine " Requiem Mass in three flats," whereas it turned out to be " Tommy, make room for your uncle, ■" Oh, you ridiculous man," and three original Christy Minstrel conundrums. As they could not stop the phonograph after it .was once unbottled, this selection was a little out of place. It is impossible to be too particular about putting t-hp labels on,-rSporting Life.

. MrLipman Lovy of Wellington has been gazetted as a J.P.'

; Mr James Jones, settler at Mastorton, has filed his schedule. ■

' Ail the existing pounds in the Hutt County are abolished. The usual weekly session of the LifeBoat Lodge, 1.0. G.T., mil be held at the Foresters Hall this evening at 7.30 p.m. It .is reported that gold has been discovered at Wainuiomata by a prospector named Cooper. ,

_ Amelius Morland Smith, of Wellington, civil servant, has filed a statement of his inability to meet his engagements with his creditors.

Tho tune for making the valuations under the Land Tax Act has been further extended up till the 28tli of this month.

Two more appointments have been gazetted under the Land Tax Act. We believe this brings the number of valuers up to 214, TheGreytown Borough Council have commenced operations on the weeds &c., which have been such an eyesore to the Greytown public on the foot paths. The Rangitikei Advocate reports, that Mr D. Fraser had CO bushels of oats to tho aero. . This compares favorably with other districts, We have heard of other large yields in different parts of the Lower Rangitikei, Carnarvon,'and Fielding districts, '

It is not altogether safe to leave a horso in sole charge of a buggy. One was so left last evening in Bridge-street, Masterton. When tho owner next saw it the shafts wero fractured, the front of the body was battered in, and he hardly recognised the vehicle he had left in charge of his quadruped a few minutes before. The Greytown Horticultural Show will be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, and promises to bo a great success. A novelty in the shape of a Scandinavian woman with a spinning macliine will be one of the attractions which ought tomako the public visit this show this year. ' We understand that there will be a dance after the show,

There is a professor of the art-of writing—a Mr Knutson—now in Masterton who undertakes to teach a good hand in 12 or 16 hours, Wo may venture to express an opinion that Mr Knutson is neither a charlatan nor a humbug, and that it will pay anybody who desires to improve his or her handwriting to take lessons from him,

A statement made by us yesterday that the Bank of New Zealand had requested the Borough Council of Masterton to keep within the limits of its legal overdraft, was incorrect, We are informed that the Borough desired a further overdraft, and that it was to this application that the Bank demurred. A temporary difficulty arose from this cause in making tjie pay ments authorised at the late meeting of the Conncil, but we have reason to believe that it is one that will be speedily obviated.

On Sunday last Mr and Mrs Alexander Niehol of Horokiwi were driving in a trap in a very narrow part of the road, when through the horse shying there was a capsize and they and four of their children who were with them woro precipitated down a steep bank, All six occupants of the vehicle were more or less injured and it is a question whether the eldest child of the four will recover. They are all in the Wellington Hospital to which they were removed the same day. Horokiwi is about 24 miles out of Wellington on the West Coast. .
