The total Customs revenue cullecled at Port Aluiriri during the month of January amounted to £B.MO Bs; for tlio corresponding month 1878 it was £4,205 lGs Bd.
Tlio vital statistics show ihe'number of deaths duviii<; the past month in the district of Napier as 10; during corresponding month of last year there wore 27 deatlia, and in January, 1877, 17. The number of births registered last mouth wis 88 ; in January of last year, 31. Tlicvo were only four marriage,') last month, while in January 1878 there were 10.
LIQUOR STEALING,.
John Hare, formerly Registrar of the Supremo Court, Napier, and subsequently at Wanganui, was arrested yesterday on a charge of larceny of liquor from White's hotel. Fai'iidon, the landlord, for several days missed bottles of brandy from the store-room, and suspecting the servants, watched on Saturday evening, and saw Hare open the room with a key and enter. The landlord followed, and found Hare in possession of three bottles of brandy. A skeleton key was found on him. When the police went to arrest him Haro fell into a fit, and it was found impossible to remove him, ho being suffering from delirium tremens. It is thought he will not recover. NAPIER RACES.

THE KONINI HOTEL FIRE. From information received the police authorities believe that the burning of the Konini hotel on Saturday week was caused by incendiarism, but owing to the Insurance Offices .interested deciding to oiler a reward for information, it is feared no steps will be taken to obtain direct evidence sufficient to convict guilty persons or parlies, Taupo, Monday. THE MISSING TROOPER. . The missing trooper has arrived safe. The search party met him on the coach road. He states ho met a man in a very exhausted condition who had lost himself for ten days on Tokorooa Plains. REWI. Rewi arrived at Oruanui last night; There are not many natives here as yet. Wgstport, Monday. WESTPORT OHIKI CONTRACT. . The Oliiki bridge contractors acceptedthe tender of the local man for £1,998. The Koronui Company, who have let the contract of the bridge, propose to push on the construction of the branch lino, and put a second issue of scrip into the market when the time is complete. •
CHARGE OP NEGLECT OP DUTY.
Mr Cooper and Major Roberta, R.M., arrived by the Reefton coach on Saturday to sit as a Commission to-day in regard to the charge of intemperance and consequent neglect of duty mado against Warden Broad, KM., by the police officer in charge to his superiors. It is said the latter has been excited by the Warden reporting him undeservedly. Gkahmsiown, Sunday. LEAD ORE.
Five toii3 of lead ore from a mine nt Tararu wore shipped from Auckland yesterdiiy, on route for Sydney, where it will be smelted. If the ore proves payable, the shareholders will make, a fine thing out of the claim, as there is plenty of it. HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT. The Board of Health officer's report for January shows that 14 deaths occurred, 11 being of infants who died from diarrhea FIRE AT GMHAMSTOTO. A fire broke out at an early hour this morning on liaraka, outside Grahamstown, which destroyed four bouses and shops. ■ It broke out in the grocery store of Mrs Campbell, a widow. She fortunately insured the house only.a few weeks ago for £250 in the Norwich Union olßco, An ahum was given,, and the brigades turned out; but the distance from the sheila in Slioi'tland arid Gralmmstown was so great that the adjacent buildings, occupied as a dwelling-house by a man named O'Neill, and another by H. Fisher, a blacksmith, whoso business place is in Grahamstown, and a dwelling occupied by a miner named Glasson, were all destroyed, and only through-the hard exertions of some willing hands was the fire stopped from communicating with the butcher's shop of Mr George, and destroying it and other buildings near, The shop caught three times, but the flames were extinguished with difficulty. Part of Glasson's house had to be pulled down to avert the spread of the fire. The latter saved a few things, but the bulk are much damaged. Mrs Campbell lost £25, the takings of the 1 previous evening, which were in her dress pocket, besides all her goods and clothing, gold trinkets, gold and silver medals of her lato husband, and other valuables. A PELICAN IN THE SAND.
The schooner Pelican is ashore at the mouth of the Manawatu liiver, and is owned by H. Aitlcen, of Oauiaru. She is insured for £SOO in the Standard, £SOO in the National, and £SOO in the National of South Australia, She is aground close to the spot whore was wrecked the Ivloynalian, of which not a vcsligc remains. The causes for ths Pelican going ashore are said to bo that the light breeze which was blowing fell off at a critical moment, giving the surf power over the vessel, so setting her in, and the bar having silted up more thiiu usual, in consequence of the late gale, she struck sooner than would have been the case under ordinary circumstances. The captain and crow still remain aboard. The schooner was drawing about six feet of water when she struck, Auckland, Saturday. NARROW ESCAPE OF A YOUNG LADY. A young lady while bathing this afternoon had a narrow escape. When jumping off the spring-board'the wind blew the bathing-gown over her head. She struggled in the water, but could not free her hands. Eventually two men were called. and she was brought on shore, apparently dead. After rubbing her for half-an-hour signs of life appeared, and a doctor was sent for, The recovery of tho girl is very doubtful. THOROUGHBRED STOCK. Mr Euckland held a sale of thoroughbred stock to-day on tlio farm of Mr S. Caulton. The racehorses Gillie Callimi and Hary Mount were offered, but were bought in again. The highest amount offered for Harry Mount was £IOO. Both horses were reserved at £2OO. Metcora a roan pedigree colt, was bought by Mr Morrin for £2O, and a strawberry uplt at £25. V Dunedin, Sunday. Sin,—On the 29 th ultimo, Mr Eng and party arrived at Alfredton, after following up the surveyed line of road through the Mangaone block, leading from Eketuhuna. to Alfredton, and reports that with very slight deviations from the existing laid off line a very good road may be had. A TORNADO AT ALFREDTON.
[To Ik Editor of tk Waikaba?a Daily) Sir,—l don't think we (the residents of Alfredton) ever experienced such a sudden strong and devastating gale as passed over here on the 30th ult., uprooting trees, driving haystacks to the winds, &c.' Wakelin asking the reason that a certain resolution passed at a Meeting of the Greytown School Committee was not reported.. I am sorry that the omission did .'occur but let me assure you it was quite unintentional on my part, It occurred in this way; not being ablo to be present at tho meeting I asked the chairman to supply me with information concerning tho, proceedings, which, he kindly did. 1 drew up my report from the rough minutes of the meeting and'it appears the resolution in question was not written, on tho rough minutes which I received ,|)iit was written on a separate pieco of pasA which I did not see and therefore difflHtt report.
