LYING CLUBS

In the last century (says the Old and New London), there were many organised lying'clubs, ono of which for many years held its meetings at the Bell' Tavern, Westminster. But we havo no occasion to go back to the last century for lying clubs. Yflien I was at Bishop Auckland, in the county of Durham, I found there a lying club existing and flourishing. It had a first 11 and a second 22, just like a cricket club. If a man who was amembor of -the first 11 did not do well as a liar, he was put back into the second 22 ; and if a nian did' well in the second 22, he was promoted to the first' 11. If a man could not tell lies at all he was expelled from the club. I never knew' any one expelled.
