WAIRARAPA EAST COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above Council was held in tho office of the Masterton Highway Board yesterday, the following Councillors being present—Messrs George Beetham, M.H.R. (Chairman), Bunny, Maunsell, Pharazyn, Riddiford, and Wingato. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, FINANCIAL STATEMENT, The Financial Statement was laid on the table, and showed a balance at the Bank of £33 lis 9d, and a sum of £768 9s 7d to tho credit of the General Account, COP.RKSPONDENCE. The following correspondence was received :-- From Mr Langdon, complaining of the inconvenience of tho telegraphist atTenui acting also as lineman. From Mr Oaselberg, as Chairman of tho Waiohinc River Board, requesting pecuniary aid from the Council in carrying out protective works. Referred to the Works Committee, accompanied by a copy of tho Engineer's report, as furnished to tho West County Council. From the Castle Point Highway Board with regard to tho boat for tho Ohonga Ferry, which had not arrived. Referred to the Chairman. From tho Provincial District Survey Office, requesting to be furnished with a tracing showing the locality of the Hurunuiorangi Ferry. ■ Referred to the Works Committee,
From the General Survey Office, with reference to placing lines of road on County maps. Referred to tho Works Committee. From Mr Disher, Taueru, requesting to be appointed Pouudkeepor. The .Chairman reported that the appointment had already been made. From the Featlierston and Masterton Highway Boards, in reply to the Council's circular as to tho survey of road-lines. From tho Castlepoint Highway Board, stating that the Board was not prepared to imdertako the survey, they having no engineering staff at their disposal From tho Colonial Treasurer, advising the payment of £1 to the county account. From West County Council, transmitting copies of resolutions passed by that Council with regard to tho appointment of an engineer, and to hospitals and charitable aid. Mr King was in attendance, and, in reply to the chairman, stated that he would devote all his time to the work of the joint counties. A slight discussion arose on the subject of the Masterton Hospital, and, in reply to Or Pharazyn, the chairman, stated that although he believed some somewhat serious blunders had been committed in the erection of the building, no responsibility in that respect attached to tho Council, the contract having been let before the County took over the hospital, RESOLUTIONS. The following resolutions were then adopted upon the foregoing correspondence : ' TBSUI TELEGRAPH STATION. That this Council bring under the notice of the Telegraph Department the inconvenience of the telegraphist at Tenui being a lineman, he being absent from the office four days.at a time. ROAD SURVEYS. ' That the Feathorston Highway Board be informed that the balance of £250 which they woro authorised to spend .011 the Hautotara' Road will be available immediately, and that they be requested to proceed with the works to that amount, ACCOUNTS, Several accounts were received and referred to the Finance Committee,' The Council then proceeded to the consideration of .....-• • ■• OEMNAIIV BUSINESS. Tho Engineer reported that he had received no instructions with'regard to the road over tho •' • black lira. It was resolved, on the motion of Or Pharaijyn, seconded by Cr Wingate:— That the Works Committee be authorised, to spend tlio amounts available as proceeds of special loans as soon as the proposal to raise the same is declared to be carried, provided that debentures to such amount bo guaranteed.; such expenditure to'be in accordance with tho resolution already passed with relation thereto, HURTOfUIOKAKOI BRIDGE, Tho Chairman stated that three tenders had been received for tho construction of this work, of which tho lowest was for £0,200, but the resolution only authorising a maximum expenditure of £6,000, the tenders had been declined. : Ho had waited on Messrs Blackett and Maxwell at the Public Works : Office, and they had gone fully into the matter, the conclusion which had been arrived at being that Mr King's plan should have a fair trial,. He therefore proposed that Mr King and himself should go to. town oii Monday for that purpose,. ..;.•' ! ■"""' It was moved by Cr'Pharazynjsecohded by Mr Bunny and carried—That the Works Committeo decide on plans for the Hurunuiorangi Bridge, .and have power to accept tenders for the. same, provided tho total cost, including protective works, does not exceed £SOOO, with all preliminary expenses. COUNTY OFFICES. . The Engineer submitted plans for County offices, the estimated cost of which was £SOO, It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Wirigato, seconded by Cr Pharazyn— That the Works Committee be authorised to erect County offices at a total cost 'not exceeding £SOO. KOAD SURVEYS. ' Or Pharazyn moved, Or Bunny seconded, and it was carried:—That the Works Committee be empowered to authorise the Castlepoint and Featherston Highway Boards to expend such amounts in the survey of roads through lands before the Crown grants mature as they may find to be urgently required, on reports being received from those bodies; such amounts not to bear a greater proportion to'tho rates of such district thanthe £IOO voted for the Masterton Highway Board does to the rates of that district, COMMITTEES. . . . . On the motion of Cr Bunny, seconded by Cr Maunsell, the name of Cr Pharazyn was added to the Public Works and nance Committees. MEETINOS OP COUNCIL Cr Wingate moved, and Cr Pharasiyn seconded:—That the next meeting of the Council bo held at seven p.m. Cr Bunny suggested that the whole question of the fixed time of meeting be considered at the next meeting of tho Council. The motion, however, was put and carried. The Council then adjourned sino die.
