Major Gordon, the Inspector of Volun-. teers, who hag for a considerable time been ill at Auckland, has now become so seriously ill as to. cause grave anxiety amongst his friends as to his ultimate recovery. . • PENNY SAVINGS BANKS. ' The regulations under which Penny Savings Banks are to be established in schools are as follows I They shall be under the' management of a trustee and treasurer and at 'least one other person, two of whom shall be appointed by the school committee. The treasurer to be head master, or one of the other teachers. The Bank deposits are to be invested in the nearest Post Office Savings Bank in the names of the trustee and treasurer of the school. Two managers avc to attend at the day appointed for receiving deposits in' the school. Deposits of one penny may be received, but when the account reaches L 5 it is to bo transferred to tho Post Office Savings Bank, ■ Interest may be allowed to each depositor at a rate to be fixed by tho school:committee, but it is recommended that no interest shall be allowed during the first year after the establishment of the Penny Banks. Books, ledgers, journals, and regulations will be issued to the various Education Boards in a few days. ':' FATAL ACCIDENT WELLINGTON TRAMWAY. J. Lulming, who keeps a tobacconist's shop on Lambton Quay, was accidentally killed on the Tramway line this afternoon, While the train was running up Cubastreet at an average speed of about ten miles an hour, deceased jumped out without ringing the bell to slacken speed, but after jumping out he still held on to the guard rail, and, being dragged; fell backwards between tho two cars. The poor .fellow was run over, mangled, and torn in a most frightful manner, death being instautaneous. No blame is attached to anyone but deceased. A dangerous practice prevails of jumping out of tho carriages while in motion. CONYERS BETTER, Gore, Jan. 27. Conyers almost fully conscious, but very much weaker this morning. The doctor, however, does not consider this unfavorable, NARROW EShAPE FROM DROWNING, "Blenheim, Monday, A narrow escape from Drowning took place to-day. Wilcox, Bruce, and Hemus employees of the Telegraph Department went to bathe in the Opawa river. "Wilcox being unable to swim, attached himself to the bank by a flax rope, and jumped. The' rope parted and lie was in great danger. Bruce, who was higher up the stream, saw what had occurred and swam down to the rescue, seized tho drowning man, held him up with one lwnd, whilst clutching the bank with the other.. Heinus came, up to assist, and eventually the man was brought to the land black in the face and insensible. He subsequently recovered. Bruce's pluck is much praised. NOT A BIT SURPRISED. . The foundation stone of the new Roman Catholic Cathedral was laid this afternoon in the presence of a great crowd of persons, Bishop Redward and all the clergy of the Dimedin Diocese were present.
