FEATHERSTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of the Featherston Highway Board look place at the Odd Fellow's Hall, Featherston, on Saturday, the 25th inst., present—J, P. Russell (treasurer) and Messrs H, H. Jackson, J. Donald, A.Maithcws, T. Walker, and 0. Phillips (Wardens). In the absence of Mr Barton, who is on sick leave, Mr J, Donald presided at tho meeting.

The minutes'of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and tho Treasurer reported a credit balance at the Bank of £l2l Is lid.

Walters, salary .. .. 10 0 0 Sundries and Incidental... .. 1G 19 0 ' Total.. £3CI 10 1 The Engineer reported that owing to tho harvesting season having set in, little work had been- done during the past mouth, labor being comparatively scarce; this was partitularly felt' in the East Coast district. He hoped that next month lie. would be prepared to fully resume necessary works. Also, that he had taken steps to repair the road from Benton's to the swamp, and that Hart would complete his contract for metalling tho top end in about a week; that he had prepared specifications for installing the main road across Pharaxyn's, and laid off a piece of necessary work at Land's End, Western Lake. The Government Engineer had cleared a lino past Pigeon Busn station; and is now engaged laying oil' a line of road up Cross's Gully. The road through Greytown would bo finished shortly, and they would require but two men for maintenance.

The following correspondence was then road :-

Loiter from the Masterton Highway Board, forwarding a copy of the resolution relatiii-j to the .desirability of having the road from the Waingawa Bridge to the Manawatu llivor declared a Comity road. Letter from G. W. Schwartz, asking to bo reimbursed for the cost of some repairs done by him to the Waihenga Bridge. The Clerk reported that lie had prepared a copy of the Valuation Roll for exhibition at the Board's office, Featherston, besides thr one posted atthe Institute, Greytown; also, that he had sent the necessary notices through post, The Clerk then laid on the table his deed of sureties, which was ordered to be handed over to the Treasurer for safe custody, It was resolved that the Engineer examine the repairs alleged to have been done by Mr Schwartz to the Vftiihenga Bridge, with power to settle for same and arrange for future necessary repairs. The Clerk was instructed to procure the necessary stationery and office fittings at a cost not exceeding £5. Mr Jackson, pursuant tonotire, moved, and Mr Walker seconded—That the meetings of the Board be in future held at the Institute, Greytov/n, and that the office of the Board remain, for the present, at Feathers ton.

Mr Matthews proposed and Mr Donald seconded an amendment to the effect that the place of meeting remain at Featherston as well as the clerk's office.

After full discussion, occupying some considerable time, the resolution was carried by the votes of Mestrs Jackson, Walker, and Russell; Messrs Matthews and Donald being for the ainendraant, and Mr C. Phillips declining to vote. The meeting then terminated, and the next meeting will be held at Greytown on Saturday, 22nd February next.
