A CHRISTMAS VISION.

When the red fire glows like the heart 'A a rose. * «’.•'• • And the - fitful shadows play, And float and swim thro’ the vistas dim Which lead to the Far Away; When the faintdow swells of'the chiming belle.

Ring out to the dying light, And star by star o’er the sunset bar Rises to gem the night, Then dreams awake for the Old Time’s , sake,;.. - Holding the Ireart with their spell, And we hear again, o’er the mist-veiled plain, Voices- we once loved well'.

This is no room where* deep shadows loom, Illumed by the leaping flame. But a daisied mead, where a path doth lead To the* village without a name I The sunset gleams on that place of dreams And our brown-thatched cottage stands In a garden gay with the flow’rS of May Girdled by fruitful lands. And the sombre pinea in long level lines Climb -up the rocky height, Which keepeth guard and watch and wapd • .** the valley of Love’s delight.

We wander afield where the hedgerows yield Their wealth of the pale pink rose, To a rippling brook, in a ferny nook, Where the blue myosotis grows; It is vesper time, and the silver chime Is hushing the world to rest, And my flowers you wear—the rose in your hair, The forget-me-nots at your breast. How golden white in the mystic light Is that hawthorn-scented way, What bliss is on re in that realm of flow-rs. From the world and its strife away !

Life’s crown is gained of a love unfeigned, As from maybush there pours the strain Of a bird’s sweet note, which seems to floart,

And echo our heartV refrain! Once—only once, be he king or dunce, Can a man live such an hour, .For never again, no matter when, Shall he taste on earth heaven’s dow-’er. Yet its spell shall last until life-be past, To purify, comfort, bices ’• Th'’ after yeans; of his doubts and fears, And sweeten their bitterness.

There cornea to all when the shadows fall. And the fireglow redly plays, Such vision sweet of a past complete *On tile, sunset-lighted ways,® Aqd *the heart : grows soft, as the stars •aloft Brighter and. brighter.shine, For doubt and care in that dreamland fair Is merged in a hope divine ! When the* Qhristmas bells in their rhythmic swells, 9

Peal sweet over earth again, Breathe thou this prayer to the . parkling*<aif,

“Peace, peace, and goodwill to men I”
