Britain, France, aud Germany have cordially assented to Mr John Hay’s Note regarding China. [Mr Hay invited the Powers to assist in inducing the belligerents to respect the agreement entered into at the beginning of the war, limiting the field of operations.] January 23.
The Japanese estimate that General Kuropatkin’s force numbers three hundred thousand.
The cold is intense, and a great battle is not immediately likely. The Japanese captured during the past year 23 blockade-runners, including thirteen Russian anj seven British. Two half divisions face General Oku ; two corps confront General Nodzu, and three General’Kuroki. A network of trenches separate the armies, whose outposts are 500 yards apart.
January 24. The store ship Humber has left Hongkong carrying surgeons, medical stores, and appliances for Weihaiwei, Port Arthur, and Dalny. ( Admiral Kamimura has rejoined his ship. The Vladitostock squadron has effected repairs.
