MAJOR KEDDELL KILLS HIM AGAIN.

In the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Major Keddel, S.M., gave Lis reserved judgment in the case of the Police v Brooking, defendant being charged with supplying liquor on a Sunday to a person representing himself to be a bona fide traveller. After dealing with the various Acts supporting his contention the Magistrate said : —“ lam of opinion that under the law as it now stands a traveller cannot demand or be supplied with liquor during the time at which licensed premises are directed to be closed, and the defendant must be convicted, and I order him to pay a penalty which, at the suggestion of the Crown Prosecutor, I make merely nominal, as the case has been brought for the purpose of setting at rest the- true interpretation of the law on the subject. Defendant, is fined £1 and costs.” In reply to Mr Russell, the Magistrate said the conviction did not carry an endorsement. Mr Rus>ell, who will- carry the case to the Supreme Court, asked Cor the costs of appeal to be fixed. The Magistrate fixed the costs at £lO 10s. NO PENALTY for TRAVELLER The Magistrate gave his reserved decision in the cases in which eleven men were charged with having been on licensed premises on the same Sunday, when they were required to be closed. The defendants admitted having been on the premises, some of them obtaining liquor, the defence, set up by Mr Russell being that they were bona fide travellers, and entitled to refreshment. The Magistrate said he was satisfied that the evidence had not disclosed any offence as the law stood, arid the informations would be dismissed. Wellington, January 19.
