The quantity of wheat in the colony is getting very small, according to millers, who ought to know. On Sunday morning His Lordship Bishop Julius drovs out to Waihao Downs whtre a short service was held. After the service, the Bishop discussed with the people matters relating to the work of the parish- In the afternoon His Lordship drove by way of Bedcliff to Morven where another meeting of ! parishioners was held. Bishop Julius preached to a large congregation in St. Augustine's Church in the evening. He referred to the greatness and power to which the British nation, and the Church of England had been called by God and asked his hoams what they were doing to justify God's choice, a choice that was surely made with a purpose. Part of the Church's work was to carry the Gospel 10 the Maori race, over "half of whom were still heathens. He assured the congregation that if the Church ji England understood and used its great power and influence tHs work could be done I easily and done well.
A special meeting of the Borough Couucil will be hold on Thursday evening to re-open the water gas question. There is a Btrong probability that the Council will be almost unanimous in voting to give Mr Watt another trial.
Last evening a committee of the Borough Council met to discuss the proposed schemes of lighting Waimate by acetylene gas or by electricity. All Councillors were present but the Mayor and Cr. Bitchener. The meeting decided that the result of their deliberations should not be published, a most unusual proceeding.
The Euglish Commission to America declare that they have received bo many eye-openers in America that it will be difficult to convince Englishmen of the truth. They are .especially struck with the encouragement given to workers' inventions, also to the wide application of labour-saving machinery overcoming difficulties, which were considered insuperable in England. The Commission were especially amazed at the equipment at the cotton mills, it being far superior to that in Lancashire.
The chestnut filly, Her Majesty, by Prince Alfred dam Golden Gem, which was bred by Mr G. Miller, and which gained several first prizes locally, was awarded first prize in her class at Dunedin Show on Friday last. The filly was sold by Mr Miller for 100 guineas, to Mr James Patrick, of Taieri, who has again sold her for the large sum of 150 guineas, to Mr H. Weston, of Strath Taieri. This says a great deal for Mr Miller, who, as a breeder of first-class draught stock, is making a name for himself. Mr Miller has at present a number of very promising young stock coming on.

An organisation is preparing to circulate eight million pamphletSj urging the voters to resist the danger which is undermining the Fatherland. To fight the organisation Socialists are appealing for a campaign fund of three million marks.
THE LOCAL OPTION POLL. Official declarations show that NoLicense has been carried in six electorates in the Colony—Newtown by 17 votes ; Ashbmton by 101 votes ; Mataura by 44 votes ; Bruce by 11; Port Chalmers and Clutha. Prohibition will prevail in the whole district from Invercargill to the Taieri river. Timaru has carried reduction by seven votes. A recount has been asked for and it has been fixed for Thursday next.
GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSI TION.
Mr Guinness, M.H.E. for Grey, who was returned as a Liberal and is spoken of as the most suitable aspirant to the office of Speaker, estimates the parties in the House as — Government 48, Opposition 28. Of the 48 Government supporters he claims that 14 are not to be absolutely depended on, as they will prove fearless critics of Government measures, who may on occasion throw in their weight with the Opposition. Mr Dutbie is of opinion that the Opposition have increased cheir numerical fighting strength 75 per cent., a fact that they will soon impress on the Premier.
