THE OAMAUU MARKETS

Locally there has been little doing in the last tew il ys, but prices ate very firm in all lines, excepting, ofcour-e, potatoes. The demand for prime velvet wheat has eased off, but on the other hand there is a good enquiry for fowl wheat, and Bales have been made at up to 3s 3d, f.c.b., leas commission. Oats also are firm, and as they are getting into small compass now holders are disposed only to accept full late rates; Feed barley is also very fii m, and as damaged samples are somewhat tare, business is limited to better qualities at 2t Gd to 2s 9d. Potatoes have declined very much m value on account of a considerable quantity having been offered in Dunedin lately, and only for lines carefully picked over is there any enquiry. Out of condition lines are worth £3 10s to £3 12s 6d at sidings, and good sort* up to £3 17b 6d. Wheat (new).— Prime velvet, 4s Id to 4s 2d ; Tuscan, 4s Djd ; good velvet and red chaff, 3s lid to 4s Id : medium milling, 3s 8d to 3s XOd ; diecoloured or damaged wheat for fowl feed, 2s 8d to 2s XOd, and 3s to 3s Id for better qualities. Oats. —Danish, good, 2s 3d to 2a 4d ; Gartens or short feed, 2s 5d to 2s 6d ; milling, 2h Gd; seed oats, 2s 7*d to 3s; discoloured and damaged samples, 2s to 2s 2d, according to quality; Bailey Prime malting, 3s to 3b 2d ; medium, 2« 9d to 3s; feed, 2s 6cl to 2s 9d. Tbo entry of stock was a medium one, and there was a good demand for all kinds of fa s at prices that were generally in advance of those realised last week. The attendance wa« not as large as usual. Sheep—la the store sheep pans there wos an offering of oniy 1073 head, mostly ewes and lambs of moderate quality and everything sold fairly well. A line of 105 ewes with lambs made 8s 9d and smaller lots 5s 51 to 9s 9J, all counted wethers to 14s 6d, 176 hogget* 9s Id and 53 at 10s 4d. There were 160 f*t lambs penned and they we e generally of prime quality and met with a good demand from the trade. Best sorts brought 14s 61 ao 16s Od and other* 12s to 14s, A moderate yarding of fat sheep included some good lines of crossbred wethers and ew'B, and prime merino wethers. The.market opened at prices fully up to those of last week, merino wethers selling up to 28s. The supply of beet comprised only 143 head, the bulk being of very good quality. The market was irregular, opening with slack competition, but it improved later on and prices for prime quality showed a decided advance on late rates, bieers made £9 to £l3 15s and up to £ls for extra prime, hei ers £5 15s to £8 12s 6d and cows £5 10s to £lolos up to £l2 12s 6d, for extra prime equal to 28. to 37s 6d, and in a few cases up to 40s per 1001 b. There was a fairly large yarding of pigs and baconers sold at last week s prices. Tho competition of two outside buyers caused a sharp rise in stores, and as they also took a number of the smaller porkers this class also showed an advance. Baconers made 45* to 65a, equal to 4Jd to 54d per lb, porkers 28s to 38s, equal to 5Ad to 6d per lb, large stores 20s to 27s Gd, medium 14s to 19s, weanets 10s 6d to 13s 6d, and suckers 7s to 10s.
