High School Board.
A meeting of the Wairaate High School Board was held on Tuesday evening, there being present—Rev. G. Barclay (chairman), and Messrs G. Manchester, W. Ooltman, Rev. A. S, Morrison and Dr. Barclay. Barclay. Apologies were received from Mr Howell and Mr Beckett. A letter was read from Mr Buckingham complaining of injury to his land caused by trees growing on land under mortgage to the Board.
Mr Manchester said that this matter had been settled by the occapier of the land having cut down the trees.
The head master reported that the roll number was 57, 28 boys and 29 girls. With a view to providing uniforms for the cadets the committee had decided to hold a concert on show night. As the Board would not meet until December it would be necessary to make arrangements to hold the exhibition examination for Standard VI. pupils. He suggested sending to all parents with children who have passed Standard VI, a circular pointing out the advantages to be gained by their attending the Waimate District High School. The school would send up for examination this year six candidates for Education Board scholarships, four for matriculation, ;one for a trial examination to the, Junior University examination, four for Oivil Service exams., and three for teachers’ D and E certificates. The meeting decided that the Scholarship Committee should confer with Mr Pitcaithly and draft the circular suggested by him. The Scholarship Committee were empowered to arrange with the Inspectors for the awarding of
i marks to Standard V children at the annual examination with a view 1 to enable this board to allot exhibitions for entrance to the High School next year. It was resolved to ask the Inspectors to furnish the results of the examination of the High School division of the school earlier so as to allow of the High School prizes being presented with the other school prizes. Dr Barclay brought up the question of a school gymnasium. He said there was great lack of some means whereby children could get regular exercise as part of their I education. He suggested that I something should be done to promote I physical exercise amongst the scholars, especially the girls. He moved and Mr Ooltman seconded, and it was carried, that “ A committee consisting of the Chairman, Messrs Ooltman, Manchester and the mover, be formed to consult with representatives from the School Committee and the Technical Classes Association with a view to the erection of suitable gymnastic apparatus in the school grounds, the mover to act as convener and a copy of this resolution to be sent to the bodies interested, requesting them to appoint delegates. Accounts amounting to .£8 2i were passed and the meeting ended
