Caledonian Society.
The annual .meeting of the Waimate Caledonian Society was held on Saturday evening, there being 25 members present, Mr G. S. Mathias presidffig. The balance-sheet showed a balance of £32, with a considerable amount of outstanding subscriptions. The report showed a successful year. The balance-sheet and report were adopted. On the motion of Mr Freeman it was decided that all members of the Society should bo directors. Messrs J. Kirkland, A. Cooper, J. Wall, J. P. Smith, and B. Flynn were elec.ed members of the Society. Before vacating the chair, Mr Mathias thanked members for the way in which they had worked during the past year. He regretted that last year’s vicepresident, Mr W. J. Dailey, was not able to take the presidency this year. The weather on the past sports day had been all against a good gate, and this was the reason why the balance was not so big as the previous year, but the coming year was likely to be the best they had ever had. Mr Quinn proposed that Mr Mathias should be re-elected to the position. He eulogised Mr Mathias, pointing out his capabilities for the position. Mr Scott seconded the motion, adding to what Mr Quinn had said. Mr Mathias declined to stand for the position, as he would be away on sports day. On the motion of Messrs G, Miller and G. S. Matlias Mr W. J. Wills was elected president. The other officers elected were : Vicepresident, Mr J. W. Freeman ; treasurer, Mr A. Carter (re-elected) ; secretary, Mr E. J. Buckley (re-elected) ; auditors, Messrs W. L. Scott and J. T. Quinn. The meeting resolved to hold the annual Scotch concert on the evening of the sports day. Messrs C. J. Goldstone,L. Glendinning, G. Cochrane, with the officers, were appointed to draw up a programme of sports to be submitted to a meeting on Saturday night next. The committee are meet this evening. Messrs Hamilton, Scott, C. Akhurst, and Golclstone, with the officers, were appointed a concert committee. Thg, printing committee is to consist of Messrs Wills, Scott, and Buckley. Mr G. Miller moved a vote ol thanks to the retiring officers, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Freeman suggested that a ground committee should be appointed tc look after the track, which was not fit to race on. Mr 1 Scott revived a former suggestion that all bodies interested in the track should hold a combined sports meeting and put the proceeds to doing up the track. The secretary read a letter from the Temuka Society which stated that the first cost of their asphalt work was £250. Further expenses in top-dressing and terracing had to he met. A committee consisting of Messrs Twomey, Scott, Freeman, and Glendinning were elected to go into ways and means of improving the track after holding a conference with other interested bodies. Mr Twomey urged that the utmost possible should be done to get the track asphalted, as no first-class rider would ride on it. Mr Mathias promised to bring up the matter at the next meeting of the Star Cycling Club. A vote of thanks to the auditors concluded the business of the meeting.
