Magistrate’s Court.
WAIMATE, OCTOBER 4. Before Mr R. Nicol, J.P., and Mr W. Petit, J.P. William Lane pleaded not guilty to stealing a £1 note from a girl. Constable Christie stated that defendant had been talking to the girl when on her way to town and had seized the note out of her hand, refusing to give it back, though asked to do so several times. When accused was arrested he had a £1 note in bis possession. Nellie Roberts and Nellie Shirley gave evidence in support of Constable Christie’s statement. Accused stated that he took the money to have fun with the girls. He intended to give it back when they passed that way again. Constable Christie stated that accused was not altogether right in his mind, having been committed to Sunnyside Asylum about a year ago and only recently liberated. The Bench convicted accused and fined him £5, or in default one month’s imprisonment.
