IMPORTED LABOUR.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l notice a letter in a recent issue of your journal signed by “ Ratepayer,” and I think he makes a rather startling statement. He positively assert, that Mr Bremner has imported some bridge builders all the way from the North Island. Well, if such is the case I think Mr Bremner sDould be called to account for it, for I feel quite sure there are plenty of local men to be had who could do the work. But perhaps he did not import them. They may have casually called at the Council yard on their journey through the island and asked for work. But apart from the imposed labour question, I quite agree with “ Ratepayer ” in condemning the day labour system in vegue in the Council, and I think it is high time we had a few more men on the Council like Messrs Walker and Rosa—men who will look after the interests of the small ratepayers as Well ..s the large landowners. In conclusion, I think it would be much better if “Ratepayer” would sign his name, thus giving Mr Bremner an opportunity to reply to his statements.— I am, etc., W. Gale. October 2nd, 1902.
