The gunboat Crete a Perrot, belonging to General Ferinin, leader of the Haytian rebellion, seized the German steamer Markomamua at the entrance to Port Haytian, confiscating the arms and ammunition on board. Considering it an act of piracy, the German cruiser Panther sack the gunboat, off Gonaives. New York accounts say that the crew escaped to Cape Haytien. A cable to Paris says that they were drowned. Prior to the Panther's action the Washington authorities showed little disposition to question the gunboat's act if the seizure was within the territorial limit.
