Poultry— Hens from Is to Is 4d ; loos era from Is 3d to la 6d PotatOGs— Beat Derwents from os to 6a 6d ; American Breeders, 4* ; small bags of Early Rose seed at. 43 6d each ; kidney seed from 4s to 5s 3d. Other Produce —Swedes from 2a to 3s ; carrots, 2s ; fowl wheat (inferior) at 9s per bag. TIMARU PRODUCE MARKETS. The advance noted in the wheat market la»t week still holds good, and the market closes very firm. Not a great quantity is on offer, but all coming forward is readily placed at 4s to 4» Id, f 0.b., the higher price being given for | lines of prime velvet. For secondary wheats and lines suitable for the poultry farmer and fancier, quotations are unchanged, but ready sales are made. The oat market is fairly firm, but it is not yet known what effect the rains in Australia and break up of the drought will have on this market. At present quotations are nominal and unchanged from those given last week. Feed barley finds a ready sale at 2a 9d, and buyers could do w’th more. There is no demand for malting. Potatoes show a sharp rise on the week, the Sydney demand being keen, and £3 per ton is now the offer. Strangely enough very few lines are offering. Growers who want to sell should now open their pits. ASHBURTON MARKETS. r A better feeling prevails in the Ashburton market, millers having been buying all prime at full market rates. The quantity on offer, however, is not large, the bulk of those holding prime preferring to hold off (in the hope of higher rates. Pearl or velvet realised 3s lOd to 3s lOJd; Tuscan, 3s 9d to 3s 9Jd; Hunter’s, 3s 9d. . Oats—Milling Cacadians, m good demand, but difficult to find in quantity Short food meets with a ready sale. The enquiry is bright for Duns and Danish, but discoloured samples are difficult to quit. Prices— Milling Canadians, 2s 4d to 3s fid ; short bills, 2s 2d to 2s 3d ; Duns and Danish, 2a 2d to 2s 3d. Oatsheaf chaff—Some of last weeks, £3 5s to £3 10s, sacks extra, according to station. GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Chbistohubch, August 22. There is a fair enquiry for wheat, and several sales have been made by merchants, principally to southern millers. There is not a large quantify offering by growers, who are generally 'asking much more than buyers are inclined to give. A line of Tuscan and Pearl has been taken at 4s Id, f.0.b., equal to 3s lid, at a country station. The oats market is firm, and several sales have been made out of store fir shipment to Australia, short varievies being in demand# Our Southland correapoudent writes that “ the oats market for some time past has been in a very quiet state, but the last few days has brought about a change, consequent opon a slight export demand, ft is stated that Australia will require a limited quantity of oats to carry on until the Tasmanian crop is ready. At the present time, however, stocks of really first-class oats are very limited, and that being the case an advance was to be looked for, The rate for some time past has been 2s, but now 2s to 2s 3d at wayside stations, sacks extra, is the quotation. The spring threshing will give the market ampls supplies. Since the last time of writing 12,000 sacks cf oats have been shipped, about half going coastwise and the balance to Australia;” , Oatmeal has been reduced to £l* per ton. . The potato market is firmer, as growers are not offering very freely. The prices paid during the last few days were 50s to 62s fid, and in some eases it is said that as much as 60s was given at country stations. The city merchants who tendered for the Goveroment contract have filled their requirements, and are not now inclined to give extreme pricea. The following are current prioee paid to fanners, and free of commission, except where otherwise specified : Wheat—Hunters and Tuscan, 3s 9id to 3s 10 i ; Pearl, 3s lOd to 3s lid at country stations, according to distance from port. , , L Oats—Long feed, 2s 3d to 2s 4d ; short feed, 2s 4d to 2s 6d; milling Canadians (nominal), 2s fid at country stations.
