HORSE SALE AT STUDHOL'ME

The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited (per Mr J. Mundel), auctioneer) report holding a special sale of draught, light harness, ‘and hackney hor»es, farming implements, and sundries at Studholme Junction saleyards nn Tueslay. The entries comprised 65 h-rse?, principally draughts, the major portion of which were very good sorts. There was a large attendance of buyers present from North Otago, Albury, Pleas mt Point, Ashburton, Timaru, and surrounding districts. With the exception of a few aged stale horses, every lot was sold at the following quotations Draughts, young, with trials, £3O, £32, £32 10s. £33, £34, £35 10s, £36, £37 10a, £39, £4O. £4l, £44 10s, £46, £47, £47 10s to £SO ; ditto, light and aged, £ls, £l6 10s, £l7, £2O, £2l, £25, £26 10s, £27, £2B to £3O; harness horses, £l2 10s, £l3, £l4 10s, £l6 to £l7 10s ; ponies, £l2 10s, £l3 to £ls 10s ; hackneys, £7 10s, £B, to • £lO. There was a good entry of sheep and cattle at Wa hdyke sale on Tuesday, and » good sale resulted. Quotations were as follows Fat ewes, 9s 9d, 14i to 14s 2d ; Shropshire hoggets, 8s 6d ; good store hoggets, 9s lid to 10s ; fat lambs, IQs 7d. Cattle : Springing heifer, £6 2s 6d ; cow in profit, £3 15s ; dry heifer, £2 15s; store steers, £1 17a fid.

Christchurch, August 20.

There was a fairly large entry of all classes of stock and a good attendance. Sheep—ln the store sheep pens there was a mixed entry of 3050, mostly in small lots, and a good sale resulted for ■ll classes, few lines being passed. The chief sales were ; 213 wethers 10s, 246 at Us 7d, smaller lots 12s 5d to 14s 9J ; ewes at : mixed ages 12s 6d to 15s 3d, aged 5a 3d to 8s 9d ; 290 hoggets 10s lOd, 192 at 9a 9d, 129 at 8s 9d, others 6s to lls 2d. About half a dozen of thh season’s fat b.mbs were sold at 8s 6d to 16s. There was a good demand for fat hoggets, and 520 were sold at 12s 3d to 13i 6d, for freezers down to lls for light, and 17s 9d to 22s 9d for a few heavy weights bought by butchers. The yarding of fat sheep was no! quite so heavy as last week, but the market opened well. Cattle- The supply of beef comprised 191 head, mostly prime quality, and bidding was brisk throughout A line of 14 stores from Mr T. Chapman, Mount Palm, made £l2 17s 6d to £l4 10s, and other steer# brought £5 17s 6d to £ll ss, and two extra £l3 2b 6d ; heifers £5 2s 6d to £9, and extra to £lO ; cows £6 to £9 2s fid, and extra £9 17a 6d to £ll 17s 6d, equal to 21s to 30s per 1001 b. Pigs—A large yarding of pigs met with an exceptionally brisk sale, a buyer for the Sydney market can»ing keen competition for fats. The stores were mostly small sorts, and they also sold well. Baconers made 36s to 55a and up to 70s for extra, equal to 5d to s£d per lb ; porkers 20# to 355, equal to s£d to 6d per lb; larger stores 20a to 28s, medium 12s to 18s, and suckers and weaoers 6a to lie.

GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Christchurch, August 19. Ths wheat market is steady, and with lit- le business passing, the principal oallft still being tha North Island. A few purchases have been made at late quotations of Hunter’s and Tu«can, and Pearl is worth rather more. There is a great ?c .rcity of poi'ard and bran, and prices are firmer. The oil market is firm, consequent upon the enquiries from Australia. Tnere is little off ring, but there is said to be a considerable quantity sti 1 up .hreshed in South Canterbury. The demand fu - potatoes to fill the Government contract has firmed the market considerably, and up to 47s 6d at country stali -ns has been paid, while other buyers have given 60s at near titions. THE % ASH BURTON STOCK SALE. Ashburton, August 19. There was a large yarding ef stock at the Ashburton yards to-day, a large number of turnip sheep being penned. The f it sheep pens were three parts filled, principally with merino wethers. The attendance of buyers and others was good. The following are some of tha prices realised : —• Cattle—Dairy cows, £3 15s to £7 ; springers, £3 16s 6d to £5 18s ; 18 months old cattle £2 17s 6d to £3 5s ; 2 year old cattle, £4 los ; fat steers, £4 17» 6d to £8 10s ; heifers, £5 17s 6d to £9 15s.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS,

Sydney, August 18.

At the fat stock sales 13,000 sheep were offered, inc'uding about 5000 from New Zealand. The demand was not equ*l to the supply, and prices, eapecial'y for imported sheep, declined considerably. New Zealand wethers ranged from 17s 3d to 28-i. A yarding of 706 cattle wai offered, including 200 from New Zealand, which ranged in price for nullocks from £ls 14s 6d to £l9 15s. Cows sold at £l6 7s 6d. Values generally were lower. August 19.

. Sixty New Zealand fat wethers offered at ihe sales ranged from 31s to 3S», Some lot* were withheld in consrquenee of the decline in consequence of the decline in prices. Country reports indicate that the wheat area this year is somewhat less than that of last year. Rain is urgently wanted. THE HOME MARKETS. Wellington, August 19. The Agent-General has cabled as follows to the Agricultural Department: —“ London, 18th August. There has been no alteration in the mutton market since last week. There is a better tone in the lamb market ; the average price of New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 5d ; New Zealand lamb, other than Canterbury, 4gd.
