School Committee.

The monthly meeting was held last evening; present—Meisrs Hamilton (chair), Dean, Scott, Mathias, A. Colville, Nicol, Smith and Jackson. Mr G. Pitcaithly, head master, was also present. The head master's report was read as follows : The roll number is 465, and the average attendance 430. About a fortnight ago I received a letter

from Major Loreday (marked Urgent), repeating me to sign a form agreeing to the appointment of certain officers to our cadet

corps. I thought that at last a !" thaw " had set in among the officials of the Department. As.l have received no further word, however, I fear that they must be again " frozen in." I may remind the committee that it is n a w about three yeara since we first made application for acceptance of the corps, and we seem to be as far off as ever.

All the pupil teachers who presented themselves for examin i*tion were successful. Mr W. I Marriott ha* resigned his position,

and as we have had one pupil teacher more than is allowed by the scale, it wi'l not be necessary to fill the vacancy.

The head master said the resignation of Mr Marriott broug'it them down to their scale number of pupil teachers. During discussion on the cadet corps it was said that blue jerseys and glengarry caps would be sufficient uniform and would be inexpensive. It was decided to write an 1 accept the High School Board's offer of a subsidy.

The Education Board wrote that one fireplace might be extended if necessary, and the funk stands could be repairo-l. Th»»y required imrnudlitu attention. Some of the fencing eoul I also be repaired. Messrs Mathias and Dean, visitors for th" mouth, reported everything as being satisfactory. The grounds in front and the trees required some little attention, and the drain in front of the school required flushing. A vote of thanks and appreciation of Mr Marriott's services had been sent by the chairmm, and his action was approve'].

Messrs Nicol anil Smith were appointed visitors for the month. Accounts amounting to £l6 9s were passed.

Italy, Boumania, and Greece are the only European countries where men outnumber women. Greece has 113 men to 100 women.
