Mr Andrew Carnegie has given £IO,OOO to provide a large building for the Free Library at Cork. Mr Kobt. Nieol, who arrived home from Canada on Saturday, ia looking very fit after hii trip. He has picked up a few up-to-date notions about milling and hai quite a fund of information about bis travels. In our mention of the milk can manufactured by Mr T. E Loach it wai said that the lid wai in one piece. This should have read, " the top, excepting the lid, it in one piece." A distinction, with a very great difference. Yesterday three troopers of the Ninth Contingent, Troopers T. Hobbs, Samuels and Anning arrived from Dunedin. They went ashore with the Dunedin section. The rest of the Waimate boys arrive to-day from Chmtchurch.
The American exports to Europe for the year ended June 30th decreased by 100,000,000 dollars. The imports increased by 60,000,000 dollars, compared with last year. The exports of farm products were most heavily affected.
A Wellington firm has been instructed to buy up £IO,OOO woith of poultry for the Home market. Tbe order is said to be the outcome of the satisfaction of a large firm of dealers in London with the recent shipments from the colony. Mr C. Boyes, always up-to-date, is going to give Waimateiies a treat on Coronation Day, when he starts bis merrygoroand. The Baldwin Arctic expedition, which sailed in July of last year from Norway, has established enormous depots of condensed food on Budolf Land, Oreely Island, and other points near the 81st degree of latitude, ia readiness for making a dash for the North Pole next year. A Russian cruiser of 8000 tons, with a speed of 25 knots an hour, is building at St. Petersburg. She is intended for scouting purposes and for carrying despatches in the Far East. The vessel will be armed with quick-firers and torpedoes. Another will be built next year.
There was a very good audience at the Oddfellows' Hall laßt evening to bear Mrs Harrison Lee, the wellknown temperance lecturer. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Manchester) occupied the chair, and the lecture was attentively listened to. A full report will appear next issue.
Ihe Berlin Poat states that Germany is willing to concede Holland a tariff convention, and also guarantee the Dutch colonies, Germany in return using the Dutch fleet's harbours in the event of war. The visit of the Dutch Premier to Vienna and Turin, in Germany, is muoh commented upon.
The Protestant denominations have joined in taking steps to have a plebiscite taken of Dunedin on somewhat similar linej to the recent one in Oamaru to obtain the definite idea of the paople on the question of the introduction of the Bible into the schools.
In the course of bis speech at the Junior Beferir Club's dinner at Liverpool, Mr Seddon said that the colonies indicated at the Imperial Conference lines which the Motherland might hesitate to follow. She was slow to move, and ought sometimes to fight other nations with their own weapons, and bring about free interchange among all nations. He believed that the Motherland and the colonies had a better right to trade with South Africa than anybody else. The trophy raced for last Thursday by birds belonging to the Waimate Pigeon Fanciers' Club is now on exhibition in Mr Sinclair's window. It it a handsome cup, with two bandies and has attracted a great deal of attention. The Club is now very strong in members and expects to have a good programme of races next season. The last rsce, for a pair of birds presented by Mr F. Wilson, the wellknown Christchurch fancier, takes place to-day from Christchurch.
The Waimate publicans have signed the pledge—not to sell any liquor whatsoever on Sundays. They will be proof against even the entreaties of boarders, and the pleadings of travellers, bona fide and otherwise, will fall on deaf ears. Fact it is rumoured that one publican said he would refuse the Archangel Gabriel. Two or three " travellers " who were not arohangels came down last Sunday to get a " hair of the dog that bit tbem " on Saturday night, and their remarks on learning the Btate of the poll were painful and free. Still our publicans are but sharing the fate of all reformers, and they must harden their hearts and refuse to let the liquor go or forfeit a tenner to their brethren of the glass and bottle.
