State Fire Insurance.
Dumedin, July 28. At a meeting of the coromittw of the Chamber of Commerce it was resolved to deprecate the proposal on the part of the Government to embark on the business w fire insurance on the following grounds : —That it has been abundantly proved by past ventortf that have failed that the colfltf does not furnish a field of sufficient breadth to enable such business to be carried on in it alone withofl" the risk of serious loss; that the ostensible grounds for introducing fire insurance as a Department» State has been that the exisW rates of premiumg are excessive ao" that the companies are miWi undue profits, but no evidence a support of the statement bw bf° forthcoming, whilst on the o® e hand numerous companies k* T ' found the New Zealand field* unprofitable that they have eiu» withdrawn or gone into liquidation* that it is undesirable that u* Government should enter w> competition with existing concerns. _
