A Veterans' Home.

Chiustchurch, July 22

The large Canterbury Hall was crowded in all parts this evening with an audience of about 5000 persons, when the Governor presented medals to the South African troopers, and also ga\e an address ou his scheme for establishing a Veterans' Home. His Excellency's remaiks were loudly applauded by those present, who showed a hearty appreciation of the schemo and the proposed manner of carrying it out. The Mayor of Christchurch presided, and among those on the platform were Bishops Julius and Grimes. A local committee, including many influential men, was set up to deal with the Governor's proposals.

The Otago Daily Times' Wellington correspondent writes : " The movement for the establishment of a Veterans' Home is being taken up not only in Wellington, but also in other parts of the colony, At a meeting of the Executive Committee held at Government House on Monday very satisfactory reports were received from the collectors. The first lists are to be published on Thursday. Permission was received from the Acting Premier to circulate subscription lists through all Government departments. Lord Ranfurly intimated that he bad received gratuitous offers of sites for the home from Dcmedin and from Napier, the latter comprising an offer of an area of 25 acres. A Wellington architect had also offered to furnish the necessary plans free of cost. His Excellency said that he also expected other offers of sites, but the locality of the home could not be aecided upon until a central committee for the whole colony had been set up. It is expected that the general central committee will be set up by the -Ith prox. The list of veterans and members of New Zealand Contingents who went to Africa, compiled by Lord Ranfurly, is now in the press, and will be published on Coronation Day. Lord Ranfurly has contributed a preface to (he work, which will no doubt command a ready sale, seeing that it will be a book of some historic importance and a valuable record."
