Football.

[By Spectator.] There was a large attendance of spectators at the Park on Thursday to witness the return match between Temuka and Waimate. Play started at 3.15 p.m., Waimate defending the northern goal, with the sun in their eyes. This evidently caused the local full back, Hunt, to fumble the ball badly, allowing Temuka to score twice within a quarter of an hour from the kick-off, neither of which they were able to convert. With six points against them the local team woke up a bit, and after a pretty bib of passing between Rout, Flynn, Rogers and and Fulton the latter scored near the corner. He took the kick himself, but failed to register the major points, though it was a splendid effort, the ball falling just under the bar. The game from this out was fast and open, appreciably free from scrums which characterised the match against Timaru, but the superior form and combination of the opposing team asserted itself from start to finish, Temuka eventually winning by 21 points to 3. Of the backs Flynn, Fulton and Rout showed excellent form, while the Rattray Brothers, Flaherty, Butcher and McLeish shone out promiscuously in the forward division. For the winners J. Gaffney played a splendid game and scored th ree tries and Hogan and Connelly one each, one of which was converted. Spillane potted a beautiful goal from hear half-way —a splendid kick, and was duly appreciated by the spectators. Messrs J. Anderson and C. J. Goldstone acted as line judges and Mr Moore, of. Geraldine, carried the whistle, giving every satisfaction.

Next Thursday the local team journey to Timaru, and it is to be hoped Waimate will be able to get a wood team to travel, as the taking* are to go to Mr Fred Fox, who was injured in. the match Temuka v. Ashburton.
