LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. • Wellington, July 3. The Council met at 2.80 p.m. THE ADDRESS-IN-RBPLY. Mr Marshall moved the Address-in-Reply. Mr Louisson, in seconding the adoption of the address, said that it would be a slur upon our patriotism if those who had gone from our shores to fight in South Afrisa were not compensated for their disablement, or if the dependent relatives of those who had lost their lives were not assisted. He hoped that the Government would not proceed with its proposal to establish State fire insurance, as it was a very risky business, in which much private money had been lost.
Mr McLean advocated the freehold system of land tenure. He warned purchasers of Bank of New Zealand shares that they were liable to calls amounting to £3 6s Bd. - The Council rose at 4.30 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Correspondence with reference to a dispute between the Audit Department and the Treasury as to which particular account should be charged with a rebate of stamp duty on the estates of deceased members of the New Zealand Contingents was referred to the Public Accounts Committee. LEAVE OP ABSENCE. Leave of absence was granted as follows: Two months to the Premier, on account of his being summoned to England on State affairs; oue month to Mr R. H. Rhodes, who is serving with the New Zealand forces in South Africa; and one week to Mr Hall, on account of illness.
