In the House of Commons Sir Michael Hicka-Beack declared himself a free-trader, and said it was true that Canada and Australasia, with their almost limitless resources, prospered under protection, with, if England would foreshadow grievous socia|anc fiscal dangers. Replying to tne comj plaints regarding the disparity between .imports add exports he emphasised the growth of the income tax returns, and said that they proved the better condition qf every clqss Qf the cormnonHy, The “ Daily Telegraph," commenting on the Imperial Conference, says that from recent speeches of English statesmen and Colonial Premiers it becomes more and more evident that the differences of opinion which exist in regard to questions of Empire, defence tmd commercial .relations are as hopeless as the natural difficulties in the way, which as a matter of fact, advocates of union have never seriously cpscussed. . , It has been fejf that the morning delivery of mails in Wiumate could he improved by allowing the carrier <jo start on bis round at 9 a.m, with letters which arrived on the previous day, and then when the morning mail from Timaru and Oamaru arrived another short dejivery could take place. This latter would be taken by one gf the two telegraph messengers. Suggestions to that effect were um.de'by the local postmaster, and word has-just been received that an additional delivery was approved of. The Department also adopted a suggestion to extend the present round and it will from this morning include Parsonage Paddock, High street as far as Hutt’s corner, and along King street to Mill Load. This gives about 40 additional houses tiie delivery. The next step for t)ie Department is providing pillar boxes, dbe need of which we have several times pointed out. I
At the annual meeting of-.the SheepBeeders Association, the .-President stated that, in the past few years, .the number of sheep in , this State had declined from nearly 70,000,000 to 41.000. at the beginning of this year. The -;gheep owners would do well if they finished the with 20.000. Including the loss of the present season’s lambs, would mean a loss this year of 40,000,000 sheep. In reference to the Right Hon R, J» Seddon’s suggestion that New Zealand would be willing to give British trade preference, without asking any return, and thus supply an important money contribution to the Navy, the “ Telegraph ” says the obvious commentary is that there is nothing to prevent New Zealand giving preference. No one has objected or is likely to do so, but where is the contribution to the Navy to come from ? If New Zealand gives preference to the extent that it will not collect* duties the- British Government will not get remitted taxes. How, th3n, the Navy is to be benefited it is impossible to conjecture, unless New Zealand shall pay a subsidy equal to the amount remitted in duties.
