Magistrate’s Court.
Fi’.iuav, May 30tu. Before Rev. Geo. Barclay and Mr 1 Petit, J’s P. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS! Joseph Patrick Cochrane was charged with leaving a calf in the saleyards with insufficient food. He pleaded guilty and was fined 10-. C, Meyers and Alfred Jones were charged with having left pigs in the saleyavds with insufficient shelter. Mr Hamilton appeared for defendants, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by Chas. Cornelius, the Inspector of Nuisances and Constable O’Halloran fortheproseciTon. Chas. Cornelius said the pigs were left in the yards from Saturday to Monday. There was no roof to the pens, simply a five foot fence at the back. Mr Ravenhall, Inspector of Nuisances, said that at the time of his visit on Sunday the pigs were shivering with cold. They had no straw. He did not consider the pigs were provided with proper shelter.
Constable O’Holloran gave corrobora. tive evidence.
D. A. Buckingham, butcher, and Wm. Manchester, farmer, gave evidence that the pigs had plenty shelter and there was no cruelty in leaving them there. The Bench inflicted a fine of lUs and costs. A prohibition order was granted against a local resident.
