PEBBLE SPECTACLE LENSES.
Pebble, rock crystal or quartz, is distinctly advantageous on this ground, that it is much harder than glass ; therefore a pair of quartz pince-nez or spectaclef can be carried in the pocket, together with dust and dirt and other gritty matters of such sorts as sometimes obtrude themselves therein, with rela* tively little injury. True, pebble is not quite so homogeneous as it might be; but then its want of homogeneity is less pronounced, or rather less obvious, than that which too often affects glass. There are seldom bubbles or striae in pebble, such as are seen in common glass. And as it is just those obscurations, such as scratches, chips, bubbles, etc., which spectacle lenses bring immediately before the eyes, that are most injurious to vision, no one can doubt that a quartz Ipns, properly cut and polished, is generally to be preferred to one of glass.
