Volcanic Eruptions.
New York, May 20.
Violent detonations surpassing those of May Bth were heard at St. Thomas early to-day from the direction of Martinique. Clouds of ashes obscure Fort de France like athickfog. New York, May 21. The American warship Potomac landed a party at St, Pierre and recovered the Consul’s body. Morne Pele suddenly poured a mass of lava into the sea, the discharge being accompanied by terrific detonations and thunder. The party hurriedly escaped. The British cruiser Indefatigable likewise put to sea. A new township has been established at St. Vincent. The sum of £50,000 is required to support the sufferers for a halfyear and rehouse them in fresh localities. The Lord Mayor of London has cabled a further £15,000 for the suffering and wounded. Their burns are of a terrible nature and 60 deaths have occurred at the hospitals. Heavy rain caused the Busse Point river at Martini que to over
flow, 20 li Whig demolished md 50 damaged. New York, May 21. A cinder cloud fi um Morne Pete swept with terrible velocity over Fort tie Franco dropping stones the size of hazel ants. Many of the residents took refuge on the ships, but the excitement gradually subsided. May 22. * The loss of property, crops, and stock at St. Vincent is £250,000. j The houffriere was in active : eruption again on Sunday and Monday. The adjoining districts trembled, and the shocks were felt :: at Kingstown. A dense cloud i overhangs the island, and business is at a standstill. A rumour that the extinct crater ;; on Enham, a mountain six miles from Kingstown, is active has j increased the alarm.
