The theory has been advanced that gases are constantly escaping into spao« from the atmospheres of planets, tho kind and extent of the operation pending on the gravitational force of the planet. Thus, helium gas is now eacap* ing from the earth, while Mars, being of less mass, allows water vapour to escape. It is concluded that the ice patches seen qn> Mara are not frozen water but frozen carbonic acid, and that other white appearances on that planet are due to the heavy vapours of that gas, ' ”
