FISH IN AQUEDUCTS.
It has long been an article of faith With those learned in aqueducts and reservoirs that certain fish—particular ly the German carp—by acting as scavengers, keep the water in which they live pure and drinkable. Many years ago, therefore, the Water Commissioners of a small town stocked their reservoir with German carp. But the fish multiplied so quickly that the water became fishy and unfit to drink. On examining the reserIvoir the bottom was found to be alive with fish. Whole cart-loads had been Removed some of the carp being of ! extraordinary weight; in fact, when [the water was partly drawn off they were shovelled into barrows by the [workmen employed to cleanse the reiser voir.
