The Transvaal.
o London, April 29. The garrison at Ookief, in Western Capo Colony, continues to repulse all attacks, and is inflicting heavy losses on the Boers. General Elliot's division is moving against the Boer force which proved troublesome in the vicinity of Brindisi. April 30. A German pamphlet is soiling in London purporting to contain oilicial reports from Do La Key, Smuts and Liebenberg. It reiterates the astounding falsehoods of great Boer vietories ; British atrocities on women and children, and cold-blooded murders of prisoners and wounded. The Standard characterises the pamphlet as Leyd's final effert to elicit Continental sympathy. Nino Boers who surrendered at Klerksdorp professed to be unaware of the peace negotiations. The Government estimates the war in South Afiica to next March at a total cost of £222,970,000. May 1. The prospects of peace are considered to be favourable, but it is believed that matters in connection with the treatment of rebels are still an obstacle in the way of settlement, in some quarters. The delegates are consulting the commandos in rotation, and the final conference of delegates will beheld at Vereeniging on the 25th insfc., to discuss the terms of surrender. It is officially announced that an extension of territory has been granted to Natal, comprising 7000 square miles, and including 8000 whites and 50,000 natives ; that it embraces the Vryheid and Utrecht portion of the Wakkerstioom districts of the Transvaal, and that Natal will become responsible for a portion of the Transvaal debt. Wellington, April 30. . The Government have decided to entertain the members of the ■ Sixth Contingent at lunch on jjheir return by the Cornwall to New Zealand. The troopship ia due in about a week.
