THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER. THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1902.

Montgomery’s Bioscope Company opens this evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Major Steward has left at this office some electors’ enrolment forms, which may be signed by all who desire. The ballot for the Crown Sections near Mr C. V. Clarke’s takes place at the Courthouse to-day. Mr W. J. Black, of Timaru, was in Waimate yesterday buying oats on account of Mr D. C. Turnbull for shipment to South Africa. The meeting of the Choral and Orchestral Society on Tuesday evening did not take long. Mr F. Akhurst moved and Mr W. Evans seconded that the Society carry on, and this was carried unanimously. Tne rest of the evening was devoted to practice. Italy is steadily preparing for the occupation of Tripoli, though assured by the Powers that it is not intended to disturb the balance of power on the shores of the Mediterranean. The Department of Agriculture has decided to discontinue the issue of monthly reports on-the progress and prospect of the colony’s fruit crops. This step is taken owing to the apathy of fruit growers in sending in returns. Information which has been received by the Cabinet leads to the belief that the Agent-General will shortly be able to sign a contract with the Blue Star line for a steam service to South Africa. The wheat yield for Queensland last year amounted to 1,692,000 bushels, an average of 19.40 per acres, the highest record, with one exception, during the past decade. If is understood that the Government have made a tentative offer to the Manawatu Railway Company on a basis equivalent to -30 s per share for the line itself, allowing the company to retain and realise some of the other assets. Mr Barton says that the official estimate of the loss from penny postage throughout Australia and on Australian letters passing outwards .would be £250,000. Such a loss of revenue cannot bo hastily undertakon, and he is afraid that universal penny postage will have to wait for some time, though no one is more anxious than he is for it.
